Guimo Modular Furniture System to Support Posture in Children with Cerebral Palsy

Guimo is a specialized modular seating system developed by a team of designers from Tec de Monterrey in Mexico. This system is designed to provide postural support for children aged five to eleven suffering from cerebral palsy while performing daily tasks.

The Guimo design is inspired by the structure of the human spine and consists of interconnected modules. A physiotherapist can move these modules and secure them using simple mechanisms with nuts and bolts. Furthermore, as the child grows, modules can be added to or removed from the seat.

The system attaches to various chairs using straps that include an adjustable headrest for additional support. For children with cerebral palsy, maintaining healthy posture is crucial for mobility, development, and participation in daily life.

Traditional specialized seating systems are often expensive, bulky, and difficult to adapt as the child grows. Guimo offers an affordable alternative to these standard systems because it is made from readily available components and standard equipment, which allows for cost reductions of up to 80% compared to market counterparts.

Guimo was designed by designers such as Midori Estefanía Uehara García, Judith Gutiérrez Rodríguez, and Diego Diaz Barriga Chávez, and won the national winner award at the James Dyson Awards in 2026.
