Cape Town runner will complete 24-hour run against gender-based violence

A Cape Town runner, Naema Abraham, will participate in a 24-hour run at Rondebosch Common to raise awareness about gender-based violence and the fears women face when running alone.

Abraham will start her run at 7:00 PM on Friday, September 25th, and plans to continue until 7:00 PM on Saturday, September 26, 2026, including overnight hours.

The resident of Linfrey, who runs for the Bo-Kaap Athletics club, decided to take on this challenge after learning about Johannesburg runner Elizabeth 'Tsonthso' Moselakgomo, who went missing during a run in Compton Park earlier this month and was later found dead.

According to IOL news, Moselakgomo was one of nine women whose bodies were discovered in Ekurhuleni and surrounding areas over the past two months. Abraham stated: 'I then decided that I wanted to do something to raise awareness, to say that we should be able to run at any time of day or night, wherever we want, instead of always running for our lives.'

She chose Rondebosch Common as the venue because it is close to her home. Participants will complete laps around the Common, with Abraham taking regular hydration breaks throughout the 24 hours.

Members of an automotive company from Claremont, as well as the counseling group Revive, will join the run. Abraham emphasized that the event is free and open to anyone who wishes to support the fight against GBV. She added: 'Men, women, children, dogs, cats, absolutely anyone who wants to take a stand against GBV can join.'
