On Sunday, October 4, Sandton Drive will transform into a circus performance venue as the Red Bull Box Cart Race returns to Johannesburg. The event is free and will feature homemade racing carts, costumes, and unpredictable chaos.
There are five reasons to attend this event. Firstly, it is more of a theatrical performance than a race. Before the action begins, each team performs a short skit for the judges and spectators. Carts are judged on criteria including speed, creativity, and artistry, so victory is not always awarded to the fastest machine. The UCT engineering crew, known as Kwik Kwik Nawu Nawu, is set for a vibrant performance, stating: 'We thought about this a lot, and we think we're just going to destroy it.'
Secondly, the carts and costumes themselves are captivating. Each cart is built from scratch by hand and has no engine, being decorated according to the team's imagination. The returning team Noma Yini describes their creations in three words: 'Creative. Cool. Unpredictable.' Spectators can expect to see carts designed as potjie pots, delivery vehicles, or cars assembled with hope and tape. Part of the fun is watching the favorite participants even before the start.
The third reason is the inevitable accidents. Gravity always wins, and the carts crash into obstacles at full speed, with some failing upon landing. Wheels detach, steering fails, and sometimes the cart breaks apart in magnificent slow motion while the driver clings to life. People remember the tumbles, not the neat passes.
The fourth reason relates to the track, which has a distinct South African flavor. The Sandton Drive track is designed to put the carts in difficult situations, presenting a descent littered with jumps and obstacles intended to separate the brave from the cautious. Organizers keep the layout secret, but given that this is South Africa, one cannot expect an absence of potholes or other local surprises. Steering and brakes are mandatory because the hill does not forgive mistakes.
Finally, the fifth reason is that the event is free and becomes part of history. South Africa is the only African country to have hosted the Red Bull Box Cart Race. The last edition took place in Cape Town in 2022 on the cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap and attracted over 22,000 spectators. This year is Johannesburg's turn, and it is the eighth edition overall; Sandton Drive joins the global calendar for 2026, which includes Belfast, London, Denver, and Los Angeles. There is also a title to fight for: the reigning champions, Potjie Boytjies from Stellenbosch, won on a potjie pot-shaped cart. The best part is that watching it is completely free.
Bonus: pick a team and lose your voice. Half the fun of any race is the opportunity to cheer for someone. Two teams are competing this year that you can root for. Noma Yini demonstrates energy and township spirit, striving to prove themselves, not just have a good time, stating: 'We wanted to say: 'Why not us?''. Kwik Kwik Nawu Nawu, final-year engineering students from UCT, are seeking one last adventure before graduation and do not intend to just participate. They say: 'First of all, we want to win.' Choose a side: heart or power.
