Google uses Gemini AI to make calls on behalf of users

Google disclosed this Thursday (09/24) a new development in its Gemini tests, allowing the artificial intelligence to make complete phone calls to businesses and service providers on behalf of the user.

Currently, this feature is restricted to users located in the United States who use Pixel 11 phones. Although Google announced similar functionalities last year, this new version represents a significant evolution, as Gemini can now execute more proactive contacts and, in certain situations, make decisions on behalf of the user.

In addition to previous capabilities, such as checking product availability and operating hours, the assistant can now call businesses to schedule or reschedule previously set appointments.

This advancement comes at a time when Meta has drawn attention with its Muse assistant, which has a similar capability, having reached the first version of Mark Zuckerberg, although this may have human support to optimize call effectiveness.

There is no information regarding the release forecast for this function in Brazil or other nations, nor whether it will be limited to Google's own smartphone line or expand to other Android devices.

The user does not need to manually dial the establishment's number; the command is triggered directly by the AI application on the phone, and the robot executes the procedures defined by Google. One notable innovation is that Gemini transcribes the entire process in real time, giving the user the possibility to intervene and take over the call at any moment, unlike the previous tool, called 'Call for me.'

In response to concerns about the potential rejection of the functionality by attendants, especially in the context of telemarketing, a Google spokesperson assured Wired that the testing phase was structured precisely to identify such flaws. According to him, 'with this experiment, we hope that users test a variety of cases so that we can continue to improve the feature.'

Additionally, the company informed that it instructed Gemini to end the call politely if the establishment communicates that it cannot meet the request, aiming to prevent the AI from getting stuck in an infinite service loop.
