Frequent Gmail users on the computer may have noticed design modifications in the inbox. Google confirmed the change in colors used for message highlight stars and importance labels, which are now displayed in blue.
According to the company, this modification was implemented with the goal of increasing accessibility. Google claims that the new color palette, which replaces the yellow markings that existed in the Gmail interface for several years, complies with current contrast standards, making the inbox easier to read.
Despite being a seemingly simple interface change, it has generated discussion among users. Reports found on Google support forums and Reddit indicate that some users are finding it more difficult to differentiate the two relevance indicators, as reported by Android Authority.
The main complaint raised by users is that both elements have received a very similar appearance, which reduces the visual distinction between a manually made mark and an automatically generated importance indicator by Gmail. One user expressed their dissatisfaction by saying: 'It's like I'm being visually bombarded.' Another comment on Reddit reinforced this dissatisfaction, stating: 'Annoying, nobody asked for this.'
For those who wish to maintain the ability to distinguish the two marks, a solution is available. Gmail already offers the option to revert to using the yellow star (or any other color) through quick adjustments in the settings on the computer.
Regarding importance labels, there is no option to change their color. However, those who prefer not to see them can disable them by following the path: Settings > See all settings > Inbox > Importance markers, selecting the 'No marker' option.
It is important to note that this change is not universal. It appears that Gmail for Android continues to adapt the colors of its elements to the system's dynamic theme, which can be influenced by factors such as the wallpaper.
Concerning the iPhone, the importance marker retains its yellow color, while the star already displays the new blue tone. Configuration changes made in Gmail for the computer do not affect the appearance of smartphone applications.
