A coalition of 80 countries has called for the full and immediate restoration of shipping rights and principles. Bahrain's Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Rashid Al-Jayani stated this to journalists, citing a joint statement adopted after a Security Council meeting on the issue.
The minister was accompanied by the head of European Union diplomacy, Kai Callas, the Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Mohammed Al Budaiwi, and the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Nabil Fahmy.
Al-Jayani emphasized that Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten international security, as well as the rights and freedoms of navigation. He also expressed regret over the Houthis' decision to resume conflict in Yemen, as well as over the ongoing attacks against Saudi Arabia and reckless maritime assaults.
The Houthi advance towards Bab el-Mandeb only increases risks to international shipping, maritime security, and global trade passing through this vital sea route.
The coalition noted that the threat in the region 'continues to grow.' Examples cited included an attack on a vessel off the coast of Oman on Wednesday, whose source is still unknown, resulting in the death of an Indian citizen, as well as today's attack by rebels on Saudi Arabia with six ballistic missiles.
The minister reiterated the call for the urgent and complete opening of the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring safe and unimpeded movement of vessels, without imposing illegal fees, conditions, or duties, calling for the prevention of new disruptions in world trade.
The group expressed gratitude to those working to restore global trade and supported the International Maritime Organization, stating that commercial maritime transport and workers in this sector should never be used as a tool of pressure.
