Titans coach Rivash Gobind stated at the start of the season that winning the Class Series would require '40 days of good cricket,' but this week kicks off a fifty-day tournament known as the Pro20 Cup, which began last Friday at the SuperSport Park stadium with a double match.
On Friday, the Titans will face YesPlay Western Province Cobras at 18:00, following an earlier match between defending champions Dafabet Warriors and North-West Dragons at 14:00.
As part of the announcement, which aims to attract youth and team fans, new Titans heroes are set to feature: Dewald Brevis, Lhuandree Pretorius, and Donovan Ferreira.
Also on Friday, the return of the bright play from Leus du Plooy, an Affies player debuting for the Titans since the 2018/19 season, and the appearance of mysterious spinner Tabriz Shimsi may take place.
Tickets for both matches cost only 50 rand and are available on Ticketpro, while ZARbet is running contests with prizes of ten cash prizes of 1000 rand each, free beers, and a double ticket to Melkfest. An autograph session is planned after the Titans' match.
Gobind noted: 'It's great to have access to truly quality cricketers who are at the forefront of world T20 cricket. They raise the standard of everyone else, so preparation this week went very well, and we are ready.'
He added that Donovan Ferreira will be the team captain because 'he has a fantastic cricket brain, and I really like his passion for the Titans franchise. And he is a real batter, as we saw when he scored a hundred runs in four days against Dolphins, which helped us start the season so well.'
Furthermore, Gobind expressed excitement about the participation of Dewald Brevis and Lhuandree Pretorius: 'It will be very interesting to see Dewald Brevis and Lhuandree Pretorius in action; they are young themselves, but they have attracted such wonderful attention from their own youth who just adore them.'
Regarding playing style, the coach emphasized: 'T20 is a very fast-paced game, so we want to hit with high intensity, play front-foot cricket. The intention to hit a boundary is one of the many metrics analysts measure these days, but the best batters are not just about power; they are also extremely effective.'
Gobind also commented on bowling aspects: 'As for our bowling, I want us to be a team that doesn't give up under pressure. People always say bowlers should expect to concede many runs in this format, but I don't want us to have that mindset. We have truly effective bowlers, and they must always win the battle in the end.'
The new Pro20 Cup combines Division I and Division II teams into two pools, with the top four from each pool advancing to the Super Eight. The final is scheduled for November 14. Thus, Sky Blues aim for stability but also want to be at the forefront of innovations constantly changing the shortest cricket format.
'We want to try to dominate, but we won't do it by playing ordinary cricket; we won't stick to any clichés about the game. We want to challenge the thinking around T20; the best players do that,' said Gobind. He continued: 'But stability is also part of T20 cricket, and that is what Momentum Multiply Titans achieve. It will be a big test against the Cobras, but the positive thing is that we understand our conditions. Coastal teams have to adapt to the pace when they come here; strategically they need to make small changes.'
