Red Bull Wings Cup competition offers South African gamers a chance to reach the final in Miami

As part of the annual World Championship, players from South Africa competing for EA Sports FC 27 will participate in an online tournament and the Comic Con Africa event to earn a spot in the Red Bull Wings Cup world final, which will take place in Miami.

The competitions will begin on September 29th and will be held in an online format, culminating in a national final featuring 16 players at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on November 1st. The winner from South Africa will qualify for the world final, which organizers plan to hold in Miami in January 2027.

For Zaid April, an EA Sports FC player for Goliath Gaming and the South African Football Association's eCup 2023 champion, the appeal of the tournament lies in the opportunity to unite local players. He noted: 'It's a great way to bring the EA Sports FC community together, compete with the best, and feel the Red Bull energy.'

In a 2023 interview, April discussed his training routine, which included playing, studying opponents, and working on concentration. He said: 'I train five days a week for six or seven hours, but most of that time is spent analyzing games.' Three years later, speaking about the release of EA Sports FC 27, he expressed enthusiasm for the new challenges and hope for a strong performance.

Development of the local esports scene

In 2022, esports commentator Sam 'Tech Girl' Wright and Goliath Gaming organized the 'Play FIFA Like A Girl' event in Johannesburg. The goal of this initiative was to help women and young talents in the esports field learn the game or improve their skills. Wright emphasized that priority is given to female gamers who need access to consoles, data, and the game itself, providing them the opportunity to learn from experienced competitors. She stated: 'We develop the community by being a community.'

This program proved successful in identifying new talent. Wright reported that in 2023, Goliath Gaming noticed the talented esports player Busisive Masango-Stingkamp and encouraged its organization to consider signing her. By the next event, Masango-Stingkamp had become a Goliath Gaming player and returned to help conduct the workshop in 2024.

Activity at Comic Con Africa

In addition to previous events, such as the Red Bull Re Kaofela tour, Red Bull announced that EA Sports FC fans will be able to experience and test the new game in a competitive format at Comic Con Africa. The event will take place from September 24th to 27th, 2026, at the Expo Centre in Johannesburg, Nasrec. After some senior stars played against the All Blacks in the 'Rugby's Greatest Rivalry' match, rugby director John Dobson decided to give chances to talented players, especially in the backline, while keeping more experienced players in reserve.

Captain Rohan Nel, wingers Seabelo Senatla and Leolin Zas, and fullback Warrick Gelant were not selected for the squad, but several senior forwards, including lock Jade Schicklerling and Andre Smith, as well as loosehead prop Hajiva Daimani, will be included.

Although attention will naturally focus on Ahmed and Matty in the battle for the number 10 position, other young players are also looking to impress the Bulls. Young Junior Bok captain Riley Norton will return from injury, and sensations from the Boland club, winger Leighton Davis, and Currie Cup fullback Dylan Miller will also strive to establish themselves in the Stormers squad for the URC.

He added: 'We are also using this match to bring back a large number of players from injuries and give them game time before our match against Connacht on September 25th in Bloemfontein. It promises to be a special event; we know how much the people of Paarl love their rugby, and this venue has hosted some major matches before, but never these two teams. It promises to be a great day out.'
