The Glenwood Book Fair will take place from September 24 to 27, 2026, in Durban, gathering writers, poets, artists, and literature enthusiasts to celebrate local storytelling, indigenous languages, and community spirit. The event is planned across four iconic venues and will feature approximately 60 local authors.
This cultural festival, organized by MYGLENWOOD and the Durban Book Club, is a non-profit project aimed at fostering an active culture of reading and writing, while also highlighting Durban's status as a UNESCO City of Literature. Special attention is given to promoting publishers in indigenous languages, supporting local creative talent, and improving literacy among youth; all sessions over the four days will be free to the public.
Four-Day Festival Program
Day 1: Youth and Community (Thursday, September 24)
The festival kicks off on Heritage Day with a youth program co-organized with the Umbhilo Library and the Glenwood Urban Improvement District. Key events include a 'Story Hour' featuring Deborah Young, Sam Mudli, and Mpume Ngkobo. A panel discussion titled 'The Voice of Children,' led by Kirsten Miller and featuring Dr. Devi Rajab, Michelle Matissen, Shriti Ashmaya, and others, will also take place.
The program includes a performance of 'Storytelling Through Dance' by Wusi Mahanyi and the Kwamashu Dance Company, alongside community initiatives such as launching 'Library Friends' and 'We Love to Read' programs, which encourage visitors to donate children's books. Furthermore, an open mic session hosted by Kemer Mudli will allow guests to sing, recite poetry, or share stories.
Day 2: Indigenous Languages and Art (Friday, September 25)
The morning event will be held at the Mazisi Kunene Museum (8 Delville Ave, Glenwood) and dedicated to honoring South Africa's first poetry laureate, Mazisi Kunene, as well as promoting indigenous languages. The 'Voice of isiZulu' panel, featuring Dr. Nakandjani Sibii, Ayanda Mchunu, Ntombenhle Dlamini, and Sindiswa Zulu, will address this topic. Professor Nompumelelo Zondi will discuss Kunene's legacy, followed by a presentation by Lamahosi Kunene.
In the afternoon, at the KZNSA Gallery (166 Bulwer Rd, Glenwood), an exploration of the intersection between visual art and narrative will take place during the 'Artist's Voice' event, featuring Nandi Subben, Franco Frescuri, Luke Molver, and Dayakar Padayachey. The 'Voice of Durban' panel will bring together popular local authors: Sven Axelrad, Shubnum Khan, ZP Dala, and Nati Olifanta. The day will conclude with an optional exclusive dinner, the 'Know Where Dinner.'
Days 3 and 4: Heritage, History, and Bestsellers (Saturday and Sunday, September 26–27)
The main venue is the Pansy Museum (500 Esther Roberts Rd, Glenwood). Throughout both days, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, a Vintage and Craft Market, organized by Fair Trade Events, will operate. The street literature program will highlight literacy efforts and vendors through Ille Thompson. Thematic discussions will be held, including 'Being South African' (with Dudu Busani-Dube, Dr. Devi Rajab, Kirsten Miller, and Elana Bregin), 'Uncomfortable Truths' with Professor Ashwin Desai, and 'Sense of Place,' moderated by Dr. Michael Satcliff.
Sessions with star authors and books are also scheduled, including meetings with Sui Nyati, a preview of the Mikula Book Auction, and the launch of the book Sinikithemba. Special events include a parallel silent book club organized by Silent Book Club Durban North in Poké Box near the Pansy Museum, followed by a showcase of Durban's book clubs. On Saturday evening, an exquisite multi-course dinner with wine pairing will be held at Poké Box by Matt Draper (at 6:30 PM, R590 per person).
