At international competitions in Nagoya, the Indian rowing pair Satnama Singh and Salman Khan won a bronze medal in the men's double sculls (M2X) on Thursday. This Indian team recorded a time of 6:13.25 on the Nagaragawa International Regatta Course.
Satnama and Salman were in second place until 1500 meters, but their pace slightly dropped in the last 500 meters, leading to a shift to third place. The Indian pair trailed the gold medalists from China, Yi Yu and Yi De Ni, by 3.88 seconds. The Chinese pair won with a time of 6:09.37, while Pavel Sorin and Mehardjobek Mamatkulov from Uzbekistan secured silver with a time of 6:10.49.
For Satnama, this is his second medal in rowing at the Asian Games; previously, he won bronze in the men's quadruple sculls at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
Salman Khan, originally from Amati in Uttar Pradesh state, began his rowing journey in 2018. He joined the Bombay Engineering Corps (BEG) of the Indian Army. Initially, he received gold and silver medals in battalion and inter-center competitions.
Salman twice considered quitting sports, but the support of the coaches helped him move forward. After that, he gained a spot in the Army Rowing Node (ARN), where he trained under senior coach Kudrat Ali and training officer Major Nagendra Hoody. In 2023, Salman was included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). In 2024, after winning the Asian Rowing Cup, he was promoted to the rank of Naib Subedar in the Indian Army.
Satnama Singh from Patta Maluk, Mansa district in Punjab, previously competed at the national level in volleyball before starting rowing. In 2018, upon the advice of Olympian Swarna Singh Virka, he started rowing and quickly gained recognition. Satnama represented India at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. At the 40th Senior National Rowing Championship, he won the title in the men's single sculls category, becoming the first rower of the Indian Navy to achieve this.
At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Satnama was part of the men's quadruple sculls team that won bronze. Now, he has won another Asian Games medal in the double sculls with Salman. Salman has numerous gold medals, including the 2022 and 2023 National Games. He represented India at the 2023 World Rowing Cup and the 2024 BRICS Games. In 2025, he won silver at the Asian Rowing Championships, as well as silver at the 2026 Senior National Rowing Championship. Satnama won silver at the Indoor Asian Championships in 2025 and gold at the Senior Asian Rowing Championships.
