Four Scents That Repel Snakes, According to Safety Advice

During periods of rain and heat, snakes, as well as other venomous insects and pests, often leave their burrows and head towards residential areas or directly into homes. This creates a threat to family safety and constant fear. However, it is known that certain strong odors can bother snakes. Although special measures are required to ensure home safety, there are remedies that can help repel snakes.

Using Garlic and Cinnamon Essential Oils

The aromas of these two spices are very sharp and intense. When snakes inhale their scent, it causes irritation in their glands. To apply, pour water into a spray bottle and add 10–15 drops of cinnamon and clove oil. This solution should be sprayed near door frames, window frames, and bushes. Since the aroma dissipates quickly, regular reapplication is required.

White Vinegar

The strong smell containing organic acids in vinegar can also disorient snakes. If there are ditches, gardens, or water sources near the house, pure white vinegar without adding water should be poured.

Lemongrass or Mint Scent

The strong menthol aroma of lemongrass and mint is extremely unpleasant for snakes. You can plant lemongrass in the yard or in pots. Additionally, you can soak cotton pads with peppermint oil and place them in dark corners and storage rooms of the house.

Even if these aromatic substances help repel snakes, it is still important to maintain cleanliness around the house, not pile up stacks of dry wood, and control the mouse population so that snakes do not come inside looking for food.

Garlic and Onion

Garlic and onion contain sulfurous acids and a sharp, bitter odor that disrupts the nervous system of snakes. Crush garlic cloves and onions, squeeze out the juice, mix it with a small amount of rock salt, and spray it along the main gates, fences, and garden walls.
