Chinese space station upgrades food preparation equipment, including an air fryer

The Chinese space station, known as Tiangong (Heavenly Palace), has received new food preparation equipment in orbit. A device similar to an 'air fryer' has been developed specifically for the space environment. This apparatus uses hot air to bake food, following the principle of operation of a traditional kitchen appliance. Previously, this device was used to prepare chicken wings, steaks, and pies.

This innovation is part of the upgrade to the so-called Chinese 'space kitchen,' which integrates various devices to improve astronaut nutrition during long-duration orbital missions. Information about this was presented at the National Conference on Aerospace Engineering and Medicine held in Tianjin and was covered by the state agency Xinhua last week.

Essentially, Xinhua describes this equipment as a hot air oven designed for cooking inside the space station. The system was engineered to ensure food preparation under the conditions of the space station.

According to Liu Weibo from the China Astronaut Research and Training Center, the device combines precise temperature control, adapted design, and purification technology using chemical reactions. This combination helps reduce smoke generated during cooking and maintains low energy consumption. Thanks to this, it has been possible for the first time in space to bake items such as chicken wings, steaks, and pies.

The equipment was delivered to the Chinese space station aboard Shenzhou-21 in November 2025. At that time, crews from the Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 missions worked together on the station and used this apparatus for the first time. This also marked the first instance where the Chinese 'space kitchen' was equipped with such gear, allowing for the cooking and thermal processing of fresh products in orbit.

Additional Information

The 'air fryer' is part of innovations in astronaut nutrition, especially for those planning long stays in space. The structure includes, for example, a drinking water dispenser, a microwave oven, and this equipment. According to Xinhua, the microwave system was developed for rapid food heating and to solve the problem of microwave radiation leakage at low power.

Nutrition has also changed. Currently, the range of food available to Chinese astronauts has reached nearly 200 items. In addition to baked goods, the design allows for the handling of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, pastries, and meat. Yogurt production through fermentation inside the station is also possible.

Thanks to the combination of these devices, Chinese astronauts have access to a more diverse menu, and according to Xinhua, they can consume hot food approximately 20 minutes after the cooking process begins.
