Previously, the performance of "Vande Mataram" before the national anthem at an international match took place on September 13 against Afghanistan. Following this, the tradition reached foreign lands in Japan for the first time.
The Ministry of Home Affairs mentioned in directives issued on February 6, 2026, the inclusion of singing the national anthem "Vande Mataram" in events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the composition's creation.
The first T20 International between India and Japan was shortened to only five overs because the match was interrupted by rain and a wet playing field. This match is also associated with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Japan. Both teams will participate in the Asian Games; India will start its tournament in the quarterfinals, while Japan will play in the group stage.
