Indian Government Introduces New Rules for Smartphone Screen Protectors, Mandating BIS Certification

The Indian government has announced the introduction of new rules concerning protective glass for mobile phones. Under these new regulations, obtaining certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has become mandatory for protectors installed on phone displays.

These directives were issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). According to the notification, screen protectors for mobile phone displays have been included in the list of goods requiring BIS certification. The new rule will come into effect on April 1, 2027.

Protective glasses must comply with the established Indian standard IS 19348:2025. Without BIS approval through the registration system, the sale of such protective glasses in India will be legally impossible.

The new rules for mobile screen protectors will directly affect companies and brands involved in importing into India. These norms are intended to ensure that the protective glasses sold in the market meet quality and safety standards.

BIS will develop new standards for protective glasses that manufacturers and sellers must adhere to. This will require completing testing and determining necessary characteristics. The standards will define the thickness and dimensions of the protective glass, while also paying attention to the quality and strength of the glass. Furthermore, rules will be established for anti-scratch films, oleophobic coatings, anti-glare films, and blue light filters.

The introduction of new rules for screen protectors may impact smartphone users. Business Today reported that screen protectors sold in India will conform to a specific quality standard. This is likely to affect the cost and availability of these protectors. Products manufactured according to the new standards may become more expensive.

Currently, numerous brands and companies producing smartphone screen protectors are available in the Indian market. Some of them manufacture products in India, while many others import them from China and other countries.

CCPA launches investigation into Apple over software warranty issues related to iOS 18

Problems with Apple related to the iOS 18 software update continue to mount. The Indian consumer protection regulator, known as CCPA, has intensified its investigation against Apple. The issue now concerns not only the software update itself but also the terms and conditions of Apple's software warranty.

The regulator is trying to find out why users had to pay for repairs out of pocket due to malfunctions that occurred after the iOS 18 update. Complaints have been registered, including the appearance of green, pink, and white lines on the iPhone screen, as well as microphone and other function issues. The most serious point was that some users had to pay for display replacement and repair of these problems.

The regulator questions why the costs of fixing such malfunctions, which occurred after the Apple software update, are being borne by the users. According to the report, the approximate cost of replacing an iPhone 15 screen can reach 27,900 rupees, which constitutes a significant portion of the phone's cost.

CCPA previously requested explanations from Apple regarding this matter. However, on July 29, the regulator transferred the case to its investigative team for more detailed study. The regulator classified this case as a potential violation of consumer rights. If Apple is found guilty, the company could face fines and may be required to refund customers or change its business practices.

Apple rejects the allegations. The company asserts that extensive testing was conducted before the release of iOS 18, and no major systemic software issues were found in India. Apple also points out that the CCPA case is based on only 75 complaints, and that as of June 2026, about 11 percent of iPhones were still running on iOS 18.

Another argument from Apple relates to its software warranty. The company states that the software license agreement stipulates in advance that it comes without any warranty. Apple emphasizes that such terms apply not only to it but also to other major electronics manufacturers.

Nevertheless, CCPA insists that the case goes beyond a mere discussion of terms and conditions. If users suffered damage due to a software update and were subsequently forced to pay large sums to fix that damage, it could become a consumer rights issue. The entire investigation will now focus on both Apple's software warranty and the repair charges levied on users.
