Cape Town National Parks Offer Free Access for Residents in September

Residents of Cape Town who wish to spend time outdoors on a limited budget can take advantage of the South African National Parks Week (SA National Parks Week). Free day entry is provided to a number of national parks from September 7th to 13th.

This 21st annual event allows citizens and residents of South Africa to visit some of the most picturesque natural areas of the Western Cape without paying an entrance fee for the day. Among the locations available to residents of Cape Town and the Western Cape are Table Mountain National Park (excluding the Boulder's Penguin Colony section), Agulhas National Park, Bontebok National Park, Tankwa Karoo National Park, and parts of Garden Route National Park.

Table Mountain — with caveats

Table Mountain National Park participates in this initiative, but visitors should note an important exclusion: the Boulder's Penguin Colony section is not included in the free access offer. Furthermore, the cable car fee for Table Mountain remains in effect, even if the visitor uses the free entry to other parts of the park.

Planning a road trip?

For those willing to travel further from Cape Town, Agulhas National Park offers an alternative. Further inland, deep in the mainland, Bontebok National Park provides an opportunity to explore the country's protected landscapes during this week. For a completely different experience, Tankwa Karoo National Park offers a chance to leave the city and experience the harsh beauty of the Karoo.

What you need to know

The free pass applies only to day visitors; accommodation, guided tours, safaris, and other paid tourist services are not included and will be charged at standard rates. To qualify for free entry, visitors must present a valid document proving they are a South African citizen. Children under 18 are exempt from presenting documents.

It is important to check the participation details for each specific park in advance, as participation dates may vary, and there may be special entry conditions or visitor limits. West Coast National Park participates in the National Parks Week, but free access is only available from Monday, September 7th, to Friday, September 11th; weekends are excluded.

The National Parks Week was launched in 2006 and has become one of SANParks' landmark initiatives to raise public awareness. In 2025, over 105,000 visitors took advantage of the free access.
