The new manager of Richards Bay FC, Dimitar Nikolaev Pantev, took over the club during the current FIFA international break to reboot the campaign in the Betway Premiership.
The 50-year-old Bulgarian tactician was officially introduced on Monday with a one-season contract option for extension. He replaced Ronnie Gabriel, who resigned after an unsystematic start to the 2026/27 season.
Pantev took over a team currently ranked 14th in the standings, having secured only three points after the first seven matches. Despite having no wins—the team recorded three draws and four losses—the KwaZulu-Natal squad showed encouraging moments, particularly in games against teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Durban City, and Chippa United.
Pantev's immediate task during the two-week league break is to instill tactical clarity and defensive structure into a side that has conceded 16 goals and scored nine.
New Manager
The UEFA A licensed holder arrived in South Africa with impressive continental experience. Previously, Pantev managed Tanzanian giants Simba SC, who reached the group stage of the CAF Champions League in 2025, and also guided Botswana's Orapa United to the group phase of the CAF Confederation League in 2024.
His recent domestic achievements include winning the Botswana Premier League title in the 2024/25 season with Gaborone United and winning the National Cup in the 2025/26 season with Jwaneng Galaxy FC.
The international break provides a crucial preparation period before Pantev faces a major test in his first match. Richards Bay will resume play on October 13, hosting champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
Club management remains confident that Pantev's extensive experience in African football will be a decisive factor in turning promising performances into positive results and lifting the club out of the relegation zone.
