Peptides are sequences of amino acids generated by the human body and possess multiple functionalities. Synthetic peptides, which aim to replicate these structures, are still subject to little investigation. Nevertheless, the FDA, equivalent to Anvisa in the United States, granted authorization for the manufacture and commercialization of six of these compounds, a decision that differed from the agency's own internal technical opinion. These same six peptides had been vetoed in 2023.

Generally, synthetic peptides are produced by pharmacies and small companies, which do not always adhere to good industrial practices. An investigation conducted in Australia revealed that the analyzed products had concentrations ranging from 51% to 190% of the dose indicated on the label. This scenario has generated great apprehension in the country, given that peptides may be linked to seven cases of acute liver intoxication.
Melanotan II may be related to cancer
The synthetic peptide Melanotan II works by mimicking the action of the alpha-MSH hormone, which stimulates melanin production in the body. Due to this characteristic, it is promoted as a method for skin tanning without the need for sun exposure, requiring only a single injectable application. However, two studies indicated a possible correlation between the consumption of Melanotan and the development of melanoma, classified as the most aggressive type of skin cancer.
