As part of an unofficial trial series between India A and Australia A teams, the first match is scheduled for September 22nd (Tuesday) at Chepauk Grand in Puducherry. This four-day first-class match will serve as a test for Sai Sudarshan, whose performance is closely monitored by selection committees.
Sudarshan, recovering from injury, will once again start for the India A team. His goal is not just to score runs but also to strengthen his chances for a reserve batsman spot in the squad for the tour to New Zealand.
Previously, Sai Sudarshan played for the Indian national team in seven matches of the Test format, occupying the number three position. However, during his visit to Sri Lanka, he was given the opportunity to bat at the opening position, which he utilized very successfully. In two first-class matches against Sri Lanka A, he scored 132 and 168 runs, demonstrating a high level of talent.
After the visit to Sri Lanka, Sudarshan was dropped from the Test series due to a leg fracture. He spent about six weeks in rehabilitation at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bangalore. Now, having regained his physical fitness, he has returned to the India A squad and will play at the same position as against Sri Lanka A.
Meanwhile, India A captain Devdhadhat Padhikkal will bat at the third position in this match. Thanks to the two centuries he scored in the previous series in Sri Lanka, Padhikkal has strengthened his position in the race for the number three spot in the main team. This is why Sudarshan is being considered as an option to open the innings.
Furthermore, the Indian team requires a reliable extra spinner for the upcoming Test series who can act as a reserve batsman. The performance of Saransh Jain, who played in the Tests against Sri Lanka, did not meet expectations. Therefore, the selection committees will pay attention to the experienced off-spinner Tanush Kotiyan from Mumbai against Australia A.
The head of the temporary selection committee, Pragyan Ojha, and his colleagues will carefully analyze the performances of players who may be included in the national team in the future.
The significance of this series between India A and Australia A goes beyond a single first-class match. The Indian team is also preparing backup options for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Since the five-match series may face issues with injuries or physical condition, having strong backup options is crucial, which explains the testing of India A players in such encounters. Additionally, players for the India A tour to New Zealand are being determined within these games.
The Australia A team also includes players competing for a spot in the main squad, such as Sam Constas, Nathan Maxwell, Todd Murphy, and Jay Richardson. Brendon Doggett, a fast bowler who won the Ashes, is also part of the squad. Tim Pen, former captain and coach of Australia, believes that playing in India will give these players valuable experience. Specifically, they will face challenges related to heat, pitch conditions, and bowling from a different length than red ball.
