On Monday, the NCP (SP) group demanded the complete withdrawal of the 0.4% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) commission for certain UPI seller transactions exceeding 2000 rupees, labeling this move as a 'direct attack' on small businesses and shop owners.
Tapase stated that small traders, stall owners, and street vendors played a crucial role in shaping the UPI ecosystem in the country, and questioned the reason for imposing this fee on them.
He noted that now that UPI is becoming the backbone of India's retail economy, the Modi government is subtly interfering with the pockets of those very small entrepreneurs who ensured its success.
