The Kalk Bay district, located on the coast of Cape Town, has been included by Time Out magazine in its list of some of the trendiest neighborhoods in the world for 2026, placing this small coastal suburb among the planet's most talked-about urban quarters.
The False Bay area ranked 31st in Time Out's annual list, which covers 40 districts across 26 countries and territories. The leaders of the list were Jongno 3-ga from Seoul, as well as L’Ocean District in Rabat and Neos Cosmos in Athens.
The appeal of Kalk Bay is easy to understand for anyone who has spent quiet days there. This district possesses a unique rhythm of life: fishing boats move through the harbour, trains run along the coast, and Victorian building facades house independent cafes, galleries, bookstores, and vintage shops. In the background, mountains rise sharply from the coastline.
Time Out particularly highlighted the combination of independent businesses, art, dining and drinking spots, as well as its bohemian character and coastal location in Kalk Bay. The recommended day includes swimming in the tidal pool at Dielbrook, having coffee at Olympia Café, visiting Kalk Bay's galleries and bookstores, having lunch at Kalky’s, and spending the evening with live music and theatre.
The compilation of this ranking was based on nominations from the global network of local editors and Time Out experts. When assessing the districts, aspects such as culture, nightlife, independent business, quality of life, community life, and gastronomy were taken into account.
Nevertheless, the appeal of Kalk Bay has never depended solely on such rankings. It is a place where a cup of quick coffee can turn into a long day by the sea, where one can browse old books before seeing the return of fishing vessels to the harbour, and where the mountains and the ocean are always part of the landscape. Now, this unique combination of Cape Town has gained recognition on the world stage.
