Pakistan Cricket Team Undergoes Changes Ahead of Asian Games 2026

Mohammad Ridwan, a wicket-keeper and batsman from Pakistan, faced a serious obstacle in his legal battle against the National Cyber Crime Agency (NCCIA). The Lahore High Court rejected Ridwan's petition on Thursday (September 17), which challenged a notification issued by this agency. The hearing was conducted by Chief Justice Alia Nilm.

Mohammad Ridwan's lawyer, Qazi Umar Ali, appeared in court and stated that the allegations against his client were unfounded. According to the lawyer, after the match at Lord's, Ridwan was called for questioning in the hotel lobby, but no notification was given to him at that time.

The lawyer also reported that the investigative agency confiscated Ridwan's mobile phone during the interrogation. Although he was promised the return of the phone within three hours, this did not happen. Furthermore, the lawyer argued that if the case related to cricket corruption, it should fall under the jurisdiction of the ICC's anti-corruption unit. However, according to him, no case involving Ridwan had been transferred to the ICC's anti-corruption unit.

During the hearing, Chief Justice Alia Nilm expressed dissatisfaction with the lawyer due to the lack of case materials. She reminded that NCCIA summoned Mohammad Ridwan on September 10, and he appeared before the agency as per the court order. The court asked the lawyer why it was necessary to go to court if Ridwan had already appeared before the agency. After this, the Chief Justice ordered the lawyer to first approach NCCIA to present his position and submit a response to the notification. Subsequently, the petition was dismissed.

According to the NCCIA notification, the agency is investigating matters related to online betting and gambling. Ridwan questioned the legality of the notification and the agency's jurisdiction in court. He claimed that the notification did not specify any concrete charges, nor did it clarify what specific illegal actions he was allegedly involved in. After appearing before the agency, Ridwan sent a written response via courier, demanding justification for his court summons and clarification on the status of the confiscated mobile phone.

Imam Ul Haq, a Pakistan team player who bats as an opener alongside Mohammad Ridwan, was also at the NCCIA office in Johar Town. According to available information, both players were interrogated for two hours. Pakistani media reports suggest that one aspect of the investigation relates to an alleged leak of information from the Pakistan dressing room during a series of matches against England. Investigators also questioned both players about their interactions and meetings during training and matches in England.

The agency conducted forensic and technical analysis of both players' mobile phones, examining their messages, contacts, and other digital data, as well as analyzing alleged financial operations and suspicious transactions. Nevertheless, NCCIA has not yet officially published any final findings against Mohammad Ridwan or Imam Ul Haq. This investigation arose against the backdrop of significant changes in the Pakistan team composition. According to the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) notification dated August 31, the selection committee recommended including both players in the team after discussing their names at the meeting on June 2. The board requested information regarding selection criteria, player performance, and other aspects related to their selection. At present, the NCCIA investigation is ongoing, and no official announcement regarding further action or findings against Ridwan and Imam Ul Haq has been made.

Although the Pakistan team lost to England in a series of three Test matches with a score of 0-3, there is still an atmosphere of celebration among fans. The Pakistani athletes appeared helpless throughout the entire series against England.

When Rajulla first received his Pakistan Test kit at Edgbaston, he immediately left his mark. On only the fourth ball of his Test career, he dismissed the outstanding English batsman Joe Root. In the first half of the match, he scored 4 runs thanks to his intimidating pace.

In the second half of the match, when the Pakistan team was on the verge of defeat, Rajulla came onto the field as number nine batsman. What happened next was unexpected. He played a brilliant match, scoring 81 runs off just 63 balls. This innings included 9 sixes and 4 fours. He reached a half-century in just 43 balls, which is the fastest half-century in a debut Test for Pakistan. Along with Mohammad Abbas (42 runs), he built a record partnership of 121 runs for the ninth wicket, saving the team from defeat in the innings.

Rajulla's fearless style and pace prompted applause from the English spectators. After the match, the entire stadium at Edgbaston stood up to pay tribute to this young player. Nevertheless, the Pakistan team lost this match by 8 wickets and completely lost the series 0-3.

Significant changes have been made to the Indian squad participating in the 2026 Asian Games. The men's selection committee has formed a team of 15 players, which includes the young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Meanwhile, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya could not make this list.

Shreyas Iyer will lead the team, and Tilak Verma has been appointed as vice-captain. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan will take charge of the wicket-keeping positions.

For Vaibhav Suryavanshi, this is another big opportunity as he is included in the 15-man squad for the Asian Games. Furthermore, he has been selected to participate in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. Hardik Pandya's name is absent from the squad selected for the Asian Games. Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Akshar Patel, and Washington Sundar have been included as all-rounders. Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Yash Thakur will head the bowling unit. Additionally, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi will strengthen the spin department.

The selection committee also provided an important update regarding Harshit Rana. Although Harshit Rana successfully recovered during rehabilitation, he sustained a rectus femoris strain while bowling during the September 7 training match. Due to this injury, he has been excluded from both the T20I series against Afghanistan and the Asian Games. His place was taken by fast bowler Yash Thakur from Vidwarha.

27-year-old Yash Thakur recently debuted in T20I during India's tour in Zimbabwe. He played two matches and took four wickets. His home T20 statistics are also impressive: he took 114 wickets in 76 T20 matches at an average pace of 8.20. Now Yash faces two major opportunities: he will be part of the Indian team in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, and then he will be available for the Asian Games.

The squad for the series against Afghanistan has also changed. The updated squad for the three T20I matches against Afghanistan consists of 15 players. It should be noted that the Asian Games will take place from September 19 to October 4, where the Indian team will play in the quarterfinals on September 28. The T20 series against Afghanistan starts on September 13; the other two matches are scheduled for September 15 and 17. All matches of the series against Afghanistan will be held at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
