Chamnan Lal traveled to Amritsar on September 11th as part of a Punjab government pilgrimage program to visit Sri Harmandir Sahib. According to his family, Chamnan Lal suffers from memory problems. In Amritsar, he separated from the group of pilgrims and got lost, eventually reaching a railway station where he boarded a train to Bihar and reached Gaya.

Upon receiving the information, Chamnan Lal's grandson, Sukachin Singh, arrived in Machhiwara and recognized his grandfather.
