According to the report, in 2023 during the T20 series against Ireland, Agarkar strongly opposed appointing Jasprit Bumrah as captain. He insisted that the young batter Rituraj Gaikwad should take charge of the team.
In August 2023, shortly before the Asia Cup, India was scheduled to play two T20 matches against Ireland. The legendary fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was returning after a serious injury after months. Agarkar believed it was necessary to reduce the additional pressure on Bumrah to manage his workload.
