England takes first place in T20 Cricket rankings after defeating Sri Lanka, surpassing India

Despite the Indian team winning against Afghanistan in a three-match T20 International series with a score of 3-0, they had to give up the number one spot in the ICC T20I rankings. England secured the top position by achieving a clean triumph over Sri Lanka in the three-match series.

In the third T20 match, held at Old Trafford stadium in Manchester, England defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets. Sri Lanka initially scored 124 runs, and England managed to reach the target in just 9.4 overs, thanks to Jos Buttler's unbeaten performance, who scored 62* runs.

This victory allowed England to win the series 3-0 and reclaim the number one spot in the T20I rankings. Notably, India and England currently have the same number of ranking points—269. However, based on match results and rankings, England overtook India.

India has 17,201 points from 64 matches, while England has accumulated 11,021 points from 41 matches. Following India's impressive victory over Afghanistan, the ranking change occurred due to England's clean triumph over Sri Lanka. This is the second instance in 2026 where England has taken the number one spot from India in T20I. Previously, England held the top spot after defeating India in a 4-0 series.

In the third T20, opener Jos Buttler scored 62* runs off 32 balls, and captain Harry Brook scored 33 runs. Harry Brook was named Player of the Series for his outstanding performance throughout the tournament. This game marked England's fifteenth T20 International victory against Sri Lanka.

Second T20I match between India and Afghanistan in Delhi: changes in the Indian squad

In the second match of the three-match T20I series between India and Afghanistan, taking place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, the captain of the Indian team, Shreyas Iyer, decided to win the toss and start the game with a toss.

Vibhash Suryawanshi was once again in the spotlight during this confrontation, but he failed to make the starting lineup. India made only one adjustment to its playing XI: left-arm spinner Ravi Bishnoi returned to the team.

Captain Shreyas Iyer announced that Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out of the match due to a side muscle strain. He was replaced by Bishnoi. It is worth noting that Varun Chakravarthy participated in the first T20I but must now rest due to injury.

The Indian squad includes Sajju Samson as a batter-bowler, as well as Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, captain Shreyas Iyer, Tilak Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, and Jasprit Bumrah.

As for Vibhash Suryawanshi, he had to miss the second consecutive T20I. He was not included in the starting lineup in the first match of the series either. Before this, there had been active discussion around Vibhash; the 15-year-old young batter attracted significant attention during IPL 2026 due to his performances, sparking interest in his potential inclusion in the Indian team. Nevertheless, the team management decided not to put him directly into the T20I starting lineup in Delhi.

The Afghanistan squad made no changes for the second T20I. Captain Ibrahim Jadaran noted after the toss that he would prefer to start with a toss if he had the opportunity. However, having lost the toss, their goal is now to ensure a strong start in the powerplay and score a large total.

India aims to win in Delhi to gain an unassailable 2-0 advantage in the three-match series. For its part, Afghanistan is fighting to maintain its chances of winning the series.

India Squad: Sajju Samson (bowler), Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Verma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah.

Afghanistan Squad: Rehmanullah Gurgaz (bowler), Ibrahim Jadaran (captain), Sedikullah Atta, Gulbadan Naib, Darwish Rasooli, Ajmatullah Umrazai, Mohammed Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nur Ahmad, Mujib Ur Rahman, Fazlakhak Faruqi.
