A large-scale modernization of canals and water bodies is planned in Karakalpakstan, with 135 billion sums to be allocated. Annually, the region loses about 2.1 billion cubic meters of water intended for irrigating agricultural lands, which accounts for 38% of total losses. Measures are planned to reduce these losses, including canal concreting, construction of new hydraulic structures, and updating pumping equipment.
The total volume of water used for irrigating 417 thousand hectares of land in the region reaches 5.7 billion cubic meters annually. This data was presented at a meeting dedicated to the socio-economic development of Karakalpakstan.
Measures in Turtkul and Bozatau Districts
In the Turtkul district, where 44 million cubic meters are lost annually from 115 million through the 'Yonbos' canal, it has been ordered to fully concrete this canal by March 1st. Forecasts indicate that this will provide additional water supply to 9 thousand hectares of land.
In the Bozatau district, the concreting of 8 kilometers of the 'Erkindaryo' canal is planned. This measure is expected to increase the area of cultivated land by 3 thousand hectares and improve water supply for another 15 thousand hectares. Additionally, two dozen artesian wells and three water management facilities will be built in this district.
For next year, it is also planned to sow 17 thousand hectares with fodder crops in the Turtkul and Bozatau districts, which should provide an income source for 2 thousand residents.
Energy Efficiency and External Financing
Work continues on replacing water pumps with more modern and energy-efficient models. Last year, 276 pumps were replaced using 30 billion sums, allowing for an annual saving of 16 million kilowatt-hours of electricity. By April 1st, an additional 59 pumps are planned to be replaced in Karakalpakstan, and 200 in other regions.
A Japanese grant of 4.5 million dollars has also been attracted to improve water management infrastructure. It is planned that the volume of such grants will increase to 100 million dollars next year.
Furthermore, it is reported that 5 billion dollars in investments are planned to be attracted to Karakalpakstan next year, which will be directed towards industry, raw material processing, agriculture, and other sectors.
