Lungi Ngidi's recent injury causes serious concern for the Proteas team

Lungi Ngidi's recent hamstring injury, sustained shortly before a series of ODIs against Australia, raises serious questions regarding his workload management and availability in South Africa's upcoming summer schedule.

Although the Proteas seamer Lungi Ngidi's injury might seem minor, the situation is causing much more concern than fans realize. He sustained an injury to his right hamstring while playing for the Titans against the Dolphins just over a week ago.

The injury occurred after he bowled eight overs in the first innings and another 8.3 overs in the second, after which he was forced off the field.

At 30 years old, Ngidi had previously enjoyed a long period without injuries, aside from a head knock sustained during the IPL in April, and this streak lasted since the Test Cricket World Cup (WTC) final in June last year.

Before this important match, Ngidi had barely played first-class cricket in the preceding months, except for two quick overs in a friendly match against Zimbabwe a week before the WTC final.

His last competitive first-class appearance before this was in August 2024 during the South Africa vs West Indies match in Port-of-Spain.

Despite taking no wickets in the first innings of the WTC final, he delivered an impressive performance in the second, taking 3/38, including a crucial wicket of Steve Smith, which helped South Africa secure a historic five-wicket victory.

Following this triumphant WTC campaign, Ngidi continued to perform at a high level in the IPL, actively participating in 12 matches for Delhi Capitals.

In July, Ngidi confirmed that he deliberately declined participation in the Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States, prioritizing his physical condition over the demanding upcoming home schedule against Australia, Bangladesh, and England.
