Brentford secured a 3-0 victory over Chelsea at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday evening. The home team claimed all three points before the international break with goals scored in the second half by Jayden Anthony, Igor Thiago, and Fabio Carvalho.
Anthony opened the scoring around the hour mark with a close-range header. Thiago then doubled the lead in the 83rd minute following a counterattack. Carvalho scored the final goal deep into added time, giving the 'Blues' their first defeat of the season at Brentford's home ground.
This decisive second-half surge occurred despite Chelsea dominating the first 45 minutes. Shalano made five substitutions in the starting lineup, bringing Jordan Henderson into the 'Blues' debut, and also starting Pep Guardiola, Valentin Barco, Danny Welbeck, and Maxence Lacroix in the Premier League. Rhys James and João Pedro remained on the bench.
Guardiola showed himself to be a dangerous player on the left early in the match, creating an opportunity for Pedro Neto, whose initial shot forced a difficult save from Kaaimhyn Keleher. Morgan Rogers also came close to a goal before the break, but his shot was deflected by Yannick Schuster after a neat combination with Cole Palmer.
After the break, Thomas Frank's team returned with much greater energy and took the lead when a Mikael Damsgaard corner was crossed by Schuster into the goal, where Anthony, unmarked, sent the ball into the net. Chelsea launched a prolonged counter-attack, blocking five separate shots in the crowded penalty area between the 66th and 80th minutes, and also appealing a penalty from Barco.
Frank's team capitalized on the opponent's open defense late in the game. Kevin Shade broke through on a counterattack, and although Emil Martinez saved the first shot, Thiago converted the rebound. Later, in the 94th minute, Shade initiated the attack by delivering a cross to the far post, which Carvalho finished.
