Terms like talking stage, situationship, ghosting, breadcrumbing, and benching are today not just slang, but define phases of relationships that were previously difficult to explain. However, among these terms are some whose meaning remains unclear, raising questions about whether such behavior is strange or normal.
One such concept is breadcrumbing. In the world of Gen Z dating, this is behavior where a person does not fully accept you, but also does not allow you to leave completely. It manifests as sudden messages, responses to Instagram stories, phrases like 'I miss you,' followed by a long silence. The person maintains contact enough so that your expectations do not disappear entirely, but at the same time does not make explicit efforts to develop the relationship.
Simply put, instead of a full relationship, you receive only rare 'crumbs' of attention.
In modern dating culture, there are many ways to communicate, so a complete disappearance of a person from a partner's life is not mandatory. Someone might view your stories, like reels, or write after months: 'Hi, how are you doing?'. These small signals often confuse the person.
By naming the behavior of breadcrumbing, Generation Z gains a framework for recognizing such conduct. This eliminates the need to constantly ask oneself: 'Is he interested, or am I overthinking?'. Now there is a word that describes this pattern.
Generation Z may not normalize breadcrumbing, but it is likely learning to name the complexity in dating, rather than normalizing the complexity itself.
