EUA to implement artificial intelligence software to optimize air traffic control

The United States is preparing to launch an artificial intelligence-based software designed to assist in managing air traffic in the Washington, D.C. area.

This system, named Smart, was conceived to examine various elements that impact aircraft movement and predict potential collisions. The contract established for the development of this technology is valued at US$ 875 million, equivalent to about R$ 4.4 billion, and will be valid for 12 years.

American aviation authorities are about to use this new technology to support air traffic management. The software, dubbed Smart—which stands for Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes and Trajectories—will first be launched in the Washington, D.C. region before being expanded nationwide.

The tool has the capacity to analyze flight data and operational conditions to anticipate traffic flow and identify potential issues. It takes into account several factors that can influence aircraft movement.

The analysis of this data should help both the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration of the USA) and airlines in reducing delays and cancellations. Furthermore, Smart can suggest new routes for flights if changes occur in air traffic flow due to disruptions.

Air Space Intelligence won a government contract worth US$ 875 million with a 12-year term earlier this year. This agreement covers the development of Smart and a related system.

The project will initially be implemented in the Washington, D.C. region, with expectations that its use will be expanded to other locations, aiming to cover all of U.S. airspace. Once fully integrated into American airspace, Smart will play a significant role in air traffic administration, assisting in predicting changes in aircraft flow and preventing conflicts.
