Neuralink, Elon Musk's company, published a video illustrating the ability to transmit thoughts into speech. The demonstration video shows a person communicating with their partner without opening their mouth. A sound coming from the computer reproduces the phrase 'I love you.'
This 23-second clip was published by Neuralink under the caption 'A beautiful surprise' and caused a wide resonance. Neuralink has been developing brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for many years. These devices are so small that they can be inserted into the brain through the hair.
The technology potentially allows people suffering from diseases that prevent them from speaking to express their thoughts. Clinical trials of this device are currently underway.
Neuralink developed a BCI called N1, which essentially creates a communication channel between the brain and the computer. When a person thinks about saying words, specific signals are generated in certain areas of the brain. Under normal conditions, these signals reach the mouth, tongue, and vocal cords, allowing the person to speak. However, in conditions such as ALS, stroke, or severe spinal cord injuries, this signaling mechanism stops functioning, even if the desire and ability to think remain with the person.
Neuralink's VOICE program is aimed precisely at solving this problem. According to the company, the N1 implant captures these signals coming from the brain and attempts to convert them either into text or directly into voice. Simply put, if a person cannot speak but tries to form words in their mind, the chip reads these intentions, and the software vocalizes them.
This is not the first example of using Neuralink implants; the company previously demonstrated how people could control a computer cursor and other devices solely by thought power during clinical trials. Now the focus has shifted to dialogue. Neuralink is testing the possibility of communication using the N1 implant for people severely limited in speech, including those battling ALS, stroke, and spinal injuries.
Previously, scientists in the US created systems capable of converting brain signals into words. In July 2026, the NIH also presented a BCI system that allowed a paralyzed person to speak from home.
In addition to the Neuralink video, information emerged about another major study. Scientists presented an implant system capable of recognizing not only words related to a person's intention but also hand gestures. In this system, artificial intelligence analyzes brain activity, displaying words on the screen and imitating gestures through a digital avatar. This research was published in Nature Neuroscience on September 14th.
This means that in the future, this technology will be able not only to understand what a person wants to say but also to try to understand how exactly they want to express it. Nevertheless, rushing to make statements about the complete restoration of human voice is premature.
The Neuralink video is undoubtedly a significant step, but making overly bold claims is not possible yet. The company itself positions N1 as a technology still in the testing phase, as its clinical trials continue, according to information on the Neuralink website. Despite this, the direct connection between the brain and the computer opens a new path for those who have found it difficult to speak, move, or hold a normal conversation.
