Venture capital investments in Indian startups sharply declined in the week of September 12 to 18

In the third week of September, there was a sharp drop in venture capital inflows into Indian startups. The majority of the attracted funds went to the earliest stages category, which is traditionally characterized by lower deal values.

This is the seventh instance this year when weekly venture capital funding fell below the $100 million mark, indicating difficulties that Indian startups face in attracting large volumes of capital.

The saving deals this week were transactions by the companies Flam and UGRO Capital. The total funding volume for the week amounted to $99 million across 22 deals. For comparison, $392 million was attracted the previous week.

Despite 22 deals being closed this week, 14 of them belong to the pre-Series A category. This category usually shows higher activity, but the amount of attracted funds remains low.

Overall, the distribution of venture funding in Indian startups this year has been uneven. During periods of high fundraising volume, this was usually explained by one or two large deals in the range of around $100 million, which provided overall growth. However, such large transactions were absent this week.

It is likely that the overall trend of funding for Indian startups will remain moderate in the remaining months of the year, and hope is placed on the next year being more favorable for the Indian startup ecosystem.

UGRO Capital, a credit platform, received approximately $39.6 million (380 crore rupees) from the Netherlands Development Bank N.V. (FMO). The AI content startup Flam attracted $40 million from QED Investors, Shah Rukh Khan, Claypond Capital, Martin Chavez, Olivier Pomel, Venky Harinarayan, RTP Global, and Dovetail. Additionally, the Deeptech startup DheyaTech received about $4.4 million (43 crore rupees) from Avaana Capital and Unimech Aerospace and Manufacturing Limited.
