The SEMICON India 2026 event, held from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, served as a significant platform for forging a wide range of partnerships across the semiconductor value chain. On the first day alone, the government announced the attraction of investments worth approximately 1 lakh crore rupees and the creation of around one hundred thousand jobs, which officials viewed as India transitioning from policy development to actual factory-level manufacturing.
Tata Electronics led the number of deals, signing agreements with global players such as Nexperia, INOX Air Products, and Sumitomo Chemical to boost domestic capabilities in gases, chemicals, and packaging for its facilities in Dholera and Jagiroda.
By September 18, this momentum resulted in a list of 25 memorandums of understanding and announcements covering private companies, research institutions, training organizations, and government agencies.
Localization of Tata Electronics Supply Chain
Tata Electronics partnered with INOX Air Products Limited to establish a localized supply chain for high-purity gases required in semiconductor production in India. An agreement was also reached with Sumitomo Chemical Corporation Ltd. to build a localized supply chain for high-purity chemicals for this industry.
Furthermore, Tata Electronics is collaborating with Kelington Engineering Pte Ltd on gas distribution systems, high-purity piping fittings, and connecting process equipment for its Dholera, Gujarat facility. Another partnership with Enomoto Co. Ltd aims to develop advanced semiconductor packaging capabilities and localize lead frame production in India.
Materials and Power Electronics
C-MET and Hindalco Industries Ltd. agreed on joint work and indigenous development of critical materials for the semiconductor industry. A statement was also made regarding the creation of domestic silicon carbide modules for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems based on voltage converters.
L&T Semiconductor Technologies Limited is collaborating with Virtual Forest Pvt Ltd. and Newen Systems Pvt. Ltd. to develop Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules for next-generation renewable energy systems. The company is also working with Fimer India Pvt. Ltd. on developing Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBT) for similar systems. Additionally, L&T Semiconductor Technologies is partnering with Capital Power Systems Ltd. to create Internet of Things (IoT) modules for smart meters.
Investment Infrastructure and Training
India Deep Tech Alliance (IDTA) announced investments totaling $236 million, which will be distributed among 56 deep technology companies. Furthermore, the India Semiconductor Academy was established through a collaboration between SEMI and IDTA.
A strategic agreement on semiconductor logistics infrastructure cooperation in India was signed between the India Semiconductor Mission and NIPPON Express Group.
Product Launches and Packaging Partnerships
SC VEGA SOM was unveiled—the first indigenous System on Module in India, integrating C-DAC's VEGA Thejas32 processor with IndieSemiC's globally certified LoRa RF module. Kaynes Semicon and IndiesemiC formed a partnership for the qualification, assembly, and testing of semiconductor packages. Kaynes Semicon also collaborates with Microchip Technology on the packaging and production of SoC eMeter. In collaboration with United BC Team, Kaynes Semicon is involved in automating internal logistics systems and power shutdown.
Workforce Development and Academic Environment
Lam Research and the Electronics Sector Skills Council of India began collaboration in upskilling. NIELIT and Siemens EDA Pvt. Ltd. are working to strengthen and enrich NIELIT's Master's program in electronics and semiconductor design, as well as other courses. NIELIT and Tata Electronics are jointly developing educational materials for diploma and certificate programs in Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP).
In skills development, NIELIT is cooperating with Singapore Polytechnic International. An open 0.8 micron PDK was also launched on the NIELIT eChipHub platform. NIELIT and IESA are engaged in developing, training, and educating personnel for the semiconductor industry nationwide, while NIELIT and SEMI University are exploring collaboration opportunities in this area.
Design and Research Tools
C-DAC and Silvaco Inc. established research cooperation, providing EDA, TCAD, and IP tools from Silvaco via the ChipIN Center.
Overall Picture
Collectively, the presented list appears less like a report from a single company and more like a roadmap of what India still needs to build to transition from chip assembly to a fully functional domestic ecosystem: high-purity gases and chemicals, power semiconductor modules for advancing renewable energy, logistics infrastructure, design tools, and a pipeline of trained engineers from NIELIT, SEMI, and IESA programs.
The frequent appearance of Tata Electronics and Kaynes Semicon in the list underscores that the development of India's semiconductor industry currently relies heavily on a small group of large private players working alongside government bodies such as C-DAC, C-MET, and NIELIT.
