Scientists have discovered the DNA of a dangerous virus in old religious books and manuscripts found in Europe. This virus, called sheep pox, affects sheep and is capable of wiping out entire flocks over centuries.

Researchers, led by Louis Lothe from the Molecular Population Genetics Laboratory at Dublin University, took samples from well-known manuscripts, such as the York Gospels, and found traces of this virus. It was determined that the virus concentration was higher in the inner parts of the pages, indicating that these pages were made from the hides of sick sheep.

In the Middle Ages, people mistakenly believed that animal diseases were caused by witchcraft, but in reality, they were caused by microorganisms. The research team did not limit itself to medieval documents; they also analyzed Bronze Age sheep teeth found in the Altai Mountains and the Eurasian Steppe, which allowed them to trace the virus's history back 3,700 years. The results of the study were published in the journal Science Advances.

Scientists suggest that the sheep pox epidemic first spread among pastoral communities in the Caucasus and Eastern Europe. In these regions, the population depended on wool, meat, milk, and hides. Trade and the movement of flocks contributed to the virus's widespread dissemination. Even in the Bronze Age, domestic herds suffered from this disease. At the same time, tuberculosis bacteria were found in sheep, indicating that shepherds encountered numerous diseases.

The sheep pox virus is closely related to the human smallpox virus and belongs to the family Capripoxvirus. Infected sheep exhibited symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, watery eyes, and ulcers in areas where wool was absent. The diseases affected the oral cavity, respiratory tract, lungs, digestive, and urinary systems. The virus spread rapidly, and in previously uninfected flocks, 75 to 90 percent of the animals died.

Survivors showed reduced productivity of milk, wool, and meat, and spots appeared on their hides, degrading the quality of the skin. The Roman author Lucius Columnia mentioned this disease as early as the first century. In medieval agricultural and accounting records, it was called pox or variola. When the disease returned after long breaks, people often considered it a new and unknown infection.

Sheep pox never completely disappeared; despite the existence of vaccines, it periodically flares up. Recently in Greece, it claimed the lives of about five hundred thousand animals, posing a serious threat to the region's cheese industry. This case serves as a reminder that ancient viruses can cause economic damage even today. Researchers established that sheep infection was a common problem for European societies in the Middle Ages, evidenced by numerous viral genomes found on leather-made documents.

This study not only helps understand the evolution of the virus but also sheds light on the history of animal husbandry. The journey from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages demonstrates how diseases spread among domestic animals, and trade routes across the steppes likely contributed to this infection. Experts note that today, diseases could spread again due to climate change, trade, and animal movement. Scientists believe that understanding these ancient samples can help improve modern vaccines and control methods. Medieval books, which served as sources of religious knowledge, have become documents of disease history.

This research proves that old objects preserve not only cultural but also vital information about health and science. Further study of the samples will further clarify the entire cycle of virus development.

Hundreds of people from nine villages participate, and this has become an additional source of income alongside their daily work.

Project participants upload photos or recordings through a mobile application. A picture of an ordinary bird earns about five thousand rupiah, while a photo of an endangered orangutan can yield up to 130 thousand rupiah. The most successful observers can earn up to 1 million rupiah per month, which significantly exceeds the earnings of an average farmer. People like 50-year-old Octavius note that this money helps pay for their children's college education. They are constantly in the forest, carefully monitoring their surroundings; sometimes, while working in the field, they take pictures after hearing birds sing.

To date, over three hundred and fifty thousand photo records have been collected, half of which have been verified and paid for. An application and artificial intelligence system are used to filter out fake or duplicate data. Most participants are small farmers growing rice, cocoa, durian, and kratom, and this side job does not interfere with their agricultural work. Women have received special benefits: Antonia Uneng from the village of Sungai Ajung was able to purchase a refrigerator and a karaoke machine thanks to her earnings.

Unlike dependence on husbands working abroad, these people now have their own income, which has increased their sense of independence. Elderly farmer Imelda visits the forest with friends, claiming that the walks improve health. Furthermore, they want to protect crops from pests such as wild pigs or deer, which previously damaged the harvests. Two villages have voluntarily banned hunting, indicating that economic incentives are changing behavior.

This scheme not only generates income but also collects data on the distribution and changes in wild animal populations. Nardiono, director of Borneo Futures, explains that previously, fifty thousand rupiah was paid for a captured bird, whereas now the same amount can be earned from five photographs, while the bird remains alive and continues to reproduce. In the long term, observation can bring more income than hunting.

Researcher Paul Ferraro from Johns Hopkins University believes that this model can have a better ecological and social impact compared to top-down conservation programs without incentives. However, there is a problem of funding sustainability: if enthusiasm wanes, people may revert to old habits. The project has received about three hundred thousand dollars in donations, half of which was spent on developing the application and AI system. Funding is guaranteed until 2028, and two more villages will soon join. Seventy-eight species are involved in the project. Success depends on whether the funding is maintained in the long term and whether people can make nature conservation a habit.

For several Indian entrepreneurs, this raised the question of giving a useful second purpose to material that has already participated in a significant ritual. In recent years, startups and small businesses across the country have begun collecting floral waste and transforming it into incense, compost, soap, decorative items, and even new biomaterials. Four such projects are presented, which view flowers not as trash, but as a recyclable resource.

In the city of Kanpur, the idea for the startup Phool arose from the observation of founder Ankita Agarwal: flowers from temples were ending up in the Ganges River. Agarwal, along with Pratik Kumar, founded Phool in 2017, developing an idea he had started studying several years earlier.

The company collects discarded temple flowers and processes them into various products, including incense sticks, cones, and other wellness goods. The company's research also led to the creation of Fleather—a biomaterial derived from floral waste as an alternative to animal leather. Thus, what began as an attempt to solve the problem of floral waste has evolved into a larger experiment in the circular economy, combining waste collection, product development, and livelihood provision.

For Maya Vivek and Minal Dalmi, the idea originated from the realization that a structured approach to disposing of discarded flowers was needed in Hyderabad. Both founders established HolyWaste, a venture under Oorvi Sustainable Concepts, in 2018.

This women-led enterprise collaborates with temples, florists, event organizers, and decorators to collect floral waste. The flowers are then sorted, dried, and undergo a process the company calls 'FloRejuvenation.' Depending on the material, the flowers can be transformed into items such as incense, natural fertilizers, aromatic cones, and soap. The model also creates jobs for women engaged in sorting and processing flowers, making the enterprise as vital for livelihoods as it is for waste management.

In Gurugram, Poonam Sehrawat noticed that flowers brought during prayers at the temple were soon discarded. She began exploring the possibility of collecting and using them for other purposes. In 2019, Sehrawat, along with Pinky Yadav, founded Aaruhi Enterprise, focusing on collecting floral waste from temples across Delhi-NCR.

The flowers are separated from other waste, processed, and manually crafted into items such as dhoop, incense sticks, idols, decorative items, and air fresheners. Aaruhi also works with women, training them in making floral products and creating opportunities for home-based work. For Sehrawat, what started with a few collection bins gradually turned into a small business built on two principles: reducing floral waste and creating jobs.

In the state of Himachal Pradesh, Ravinder Prashar took a different path. The entrepreneur from Una worked with Dr. Y.S. Parmar from the University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni to develop incense sticks using flowers brought to temples. This initiative, named Yuvan, received support under the Himachal Pradesh State Startup Support Scheme. The resulting incense uses natural parts and essential oils from flowers that do not contain charcoal or synthetic chemicals. Even unused floral material can be turned into compost.

This project demonstrates how a familiar material can go through a different cycle: from a flower brought during worship to something that can later become part of another daily ritual. For these founders, the goal is not to change traditions related to flowers, but to rethink what happens to them afterward. By doing so, they show how something deeply familiar can find a new purpose long after prayers and celebrations.
