Uzbekistan and the USA have reached an agreement to intensify interaction in the field of ensuring nuclear safety when using atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Regulatory bodies of both countries signed a memorandum that establishes the framework for experience exchange, development of regulatory and legal frameworks, and joint activities to ensure readiness for emergencies.

This document was signed during the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as reported by the press service of the Committee on Industrial, Radiological, and Nuclear Safety.
The Memorandum of Understanding was concluded by the Chairman of the Committee on Industrial, Radiological, and Nuclear Safety of Uzbekistan, Abdulvakkos Rafikov, and the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), H. K. Nieh.
Scope of the Agreement
The agreement covers many aspects, including issues of radiation and nuclear safety, licensing procedures, and inspection oversight. It also provides for improving legislative and regulatory documentation, as well as preparing for potential accidents and response mechanisms.
Significant attention will be paid to enhancing specialist qualifications. Plans include knowledge exchange between experts and expanding information channels between relevant regulatory agencies. It should be noted that Uzbekistan previously approved regulations for actions in the event of a radiation accident at a nuclear power plant.
