MAN launches electric truck eTGX with autonomy of up to 720 km for long routes

MAN has updated its heavy electric truck, the eTGX, designed for long-distance operations, incorporating higher capacity batteries, a more efficient regenerative braking system, and aerodynamic modifications.

In its most robust version, this model can travel up to 720 km with a load, positioning it among the longest-range electric trucks in Europe. The public launch of this vehicle will take place at the IAA Transportation fair in Hanover.

The main innovation lies in the battery modules. They have been enhanced, moving from 89 kWh gross and 80 kWh net to 92 kWh gross and 88 kWh net, using nickel-manganese-cobalt cells manufactured by the automaker itself in Nuremberg.

The previous generation was limited to six modules, resulting in a set of 534 kWh gross and 480 kWh usable. With the new configuration, the truck can receive a seventh package when configured as a 6x2 tractor unit, reaching 644 kWh gross and 616 kWh net. It is with this last configuration that MAN projects the 720 km, although the company itself indicates that over 600 km is a more realistic figure for daily use.

The additional axle installed in this version supports greater weight and load per axle. As a point of comparison, the Volvo FH Aero Electric 6x2 has an autonomy rating of up to 700 km.

In the 4x2 configuration, considered the most popular, the limit remains at six batteries, totaling 552 kWh gross and 528 kWh usable, with a maximum autonomy of 660 km and an expectation to exceed 500 km in real conditions.

The front of the vehicle has been extended by 12 cm, a change made possible by European regulations allowing extensions on zero-emission trucks. According to MAN, this new design contributes to improving aerodynamics, increasing safety, and optimizing driver visibility.

Furthermore, the efficiency of regenerative braking has been increased by up to 20%. The eTGX supports megawatt charging (MCS) of up to 750 kW, while the conventional CCS connector limit is 375 kW.

These figures have no parallel in the Brazilian market, as the eTGX is not sold in the country. In Brazil, the Volkswagen e-Delivery, the first electric truck produced in series nationally at the Resende (RJ) factory, offers an autonomy of up to 250 km with six battery modules.

The 720 km achievable by MAN is equivalent to the trip from São Paulo to Florianópolis without needing a recharge.

At the same stand, MAN also presented two electric variants of the TGE van, a relative of the Volkswagen Crafter, developed in collaboration with the Swiss company Flux. These vans are intended for applications where electric vehicles often face difficulties, such as emergency services, fire departments, and municipal operations.

These vehicles feature a 119 kWh battery, an autonomy of up to 480 km, and a DC charging capacity of up to 140 kW, which allows the battery to charge from 10% to 80% in less than half an hour.

The two configurations have gross weights of 4 and 5.5 tons, with the larger one capable of carrying up to 2,500 kg and towing up to 3,500 kg. MAN is working with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles on the successor to the eTGE, which was discontinued in 2024, and this is expected to be launched alongside the next generation of the e-Crafter, scheduled for around 2028.

BYD unveiled its most comprehensive heavy electric truck, the ETT 44 model, at the IAA Transportation 2026 exhibition in Hanover. This truck boasts a range of up to 600 km, is equipped with a 651 kWh battery, and supports charging power exceeding 1.5 MW.

The manufacturer has integrated fast-charging technology, used in their electric vehicles, into these transport vehicles. The goal is to reduce truck downtime and advance the company in the European heavy transport market.

The ETT 44 is a 4x2 tractor designed for combinations weighing up to 44 tons. It utilizes a 651 kWh Blade battery and an 851 V architecture. Its nominal power is 743 hp, with a maximum of 1000 hp.

The battery comes with a 10-year or 1.2 million kilometer warranty. When using a DC CCS2 charger, the truck accepts up to 420 kW and charges from 20% to 80% in approximately one hour.

Thanks to BYD's Megawatt Charging system, the power exceeds 1.5 MW. In this mode, the same charging duration takes about 20 minutes, adding up to 400 kilometers of range. The company previously applied FLASH Charging technology in passenger cars and is now implementing it in commercial transport, starting with trucks.

Stella Li, Executive Vice President of BYD, emphasized this concept, stating: 'Less time charging. More time on the road.'

In addition to the ETT 44, BYD also presented rigid 4x2 and 6x2 trucks in Hanover, including 26-ton versions for hauling with body swap capability, as well as hooklift models. The company's portfolio also includes the E-Vali electric van and the EYT 2.0 electric warehouse tractor, covering vehicles from 3.5 to 44 tons.

The ETT 44 is also equipped with features such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, and blind spot detection. The manufacturer calls its strategy 'Total Cost of Mobility,' which combines vehicles and all necessary elements for operation.

According to BYD data, its commercial vehicles are already operating in over 100 countries and more than 400 cities. Competitors such as Daimler Truck, Volvo, Scania, and MAN are also developing electric trucks, and megawatt charging is becoming an important element of this competition. Theoretically, the ETT 44 offers a range of 600 km and a charging power of over 1.5 MW.

BYD states that it has installed 10,000 1500 kW chargers in five months and plans to reach 15,000 megawatt charging stations in China. Furthermore, the company intends to bring this technology to the Canadian market. This strategy positions BYD differently in European competition, as the manufacturer works with both the vehicles and the charging infrastructure. It remains to be seen whether the company can replicate the success it achieves with electric vehicles in the truck market.

The answer also depends on the regulatory environment. The European Union has already introduced tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, while BYD aims to expand its presence in the European heavy transport market.

Range Rover has launched the Range Rover Electric, which represents the first fully electric vehicle in the line in over half a century of its history. This luxury SUV preserves the dimensions and design of the fifth generation, introduced in 2022, without any visual changes to signal the powertrain change. The model delivers 550 hp and 86.7 kgfm, values superior to those obtained by the version equipped with a gasoline V8 engine.

The manufacturer justified the development time by stating that JLR had already been marketing electric vehicles, such as the Jaguar I-Pace, since 2018. However, it was necessary to maintain the high level of sophistication and the inherent off-road capability of a Range Rover.

The two permanent magnet motors, installed on each axle, generate 260 kW each. This configuration allows the SUV, weighing 2.9 tons, to reach 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds, which is a tenth of a second faster than the V8 version. The all-wheel-drive system is electronically controlled, dispensing with a center differential or locks; it adjusts torque distribution between the axles according to available grip.

In terms of off-road capability, the model can traverse ramps with an inclination of up to 45 degrees and cross flooded areas up to 90 cm deep. The ground clearance is 26.2 cm, slightly lower by about 3 cm than the V8 model due to the rear drive unit.

The power source is a lithium-ion battery with a usable capacity of 118.5 kWh, composed of 344 prismatic cells and operating under an 800-volt architecture. At DC charging stations with up to 350 kW power, charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 22 minutes. Furthermore, the manufacturer reports that ten minutes of recharging can recover up to 220 kilometers.

In AC mode, the vehicle supports up to 22 kW, completing the charge in about seven hours. The official range, measured by the WLTP cycle, is up to 600 kilometers, although the estimate for practical use is 535 kilometers. Both the battery and the propulsion system have an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty.

The technological package of the Range Rover Electric includes features such as remote diagnostics and remote software updates, while retaining the pneumatic suspension and Terrain Response system present in other versions.

Manufactured in Solihull, UK, along with the combustion and hybrid models, the electric version is already available for orders in specific markets in HSE, Autobiography, and SV configurations, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2027. In the UK, starting prices are £154,070, equivalent to about R$ 1.06 million at the current exchange rate. For the Brazilian market, JLR has not yet released a launch forecast; the national configurator remains restricted to the Autobiography and SV versions, costing R$ 1,773,950 and R$ 2,137,950 respectively, both with internal combustion engines.

Martin Limpert, Global Managing Director of Range Rover, reported that approximately 80,000 people registered to receive information about the new model before its launch. Of this group, 70% were not brand customers, and only 20% owned an electric vehicle. It is important to note that the Electric will not replace the other powertrain options, as plug-in hybrids and the V8 remain in the catalog, with no defined discontinuation date.
