Hydrogen-powered Toyota Hilux will participate in the 2027 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia

Toyota Gazoo Racing has officially announced the partners for the hydrogen-powered Hilux pickup truck that will compete in the 2027 Dakar Rally, held in Saudi Arabia, and has revealed the final livery of the prototype.

The vehicle has been named DKR GR FC Hilux and will compete in the Future Mission 1000 category. This category is intended for experimental vehicles that run parallel to the main route without directly competing for the title in the main automobile class.

Unlike versions equipped with internal combustion engines, this model uses a hydrogen fuel cell system. According to Toyota itself, this system is '2.5th generation,' integrating elements from the second and third generations of components. Thanks to this technology, the exhaust emits only water vapor during the timed stages on Saudi soil.

The development of the prototype is taking place at the manufacturer's research center located in Belgium, where final assembly is underway before the start of the testing program preceding the rally.

The competition is scheduled to take place between January 1st and 15th, 2027, with the start and finish in King Abdullah Economic City. The Future Mission 1000 comprises 13 stages and totals 1,000 timed kilometers. To meet these requirements, the Japanese manufacturer established four strategic collaborations.

Jameel Motorsport, responsible for the distribution of Toyota and Lexus in the host country, will provide local logistical support. Denso will contribute component technology, while IAV will supply the Dragoon electronic control unit and the corresponding control software. Furthermore, Toyo Tires provided the tires, which are partially manufactured with sustainable materials, as reported by the company.

This project also aims to collect crucial data on the fuel cell's performance when exposed to severe conditions of heat, dust, and intense vibrations. Toyota has already announced a series version of the hydrogen-powered Hilux for 2028, which will have a range exceeding 400 km in the WLTP cycle, a towing capacity of 2,500 kg, and an estimated refueling time of about five minutes.

These figures exceed those of the fully electric Hilux, which has a range of 257 km and a towing capacity between 1,600 kg and 2,000 kg. However, they remain below the values of the pickup sold in Brazil, specifically the 2.8 turbodiesel version, which has 204 hp, 50.9 kgfm, and can tow up to 3,500 kg.

The use of hydrogen is not new to Mission 1000; prototypes such as HySE-X1 and HySE-X2, belonging to a consortium in which Toyota participates, completed the category in 2024 and 2025. However, this brand represents Toyota's debut in motorsport with a fuel cell, a technology whose serial implementation still faces challenges related to infrastructure. According to the European Hydrogen Observatory, Europe has 179 operational hydrogen stations.

Iveco and Toyota develop hydrogen truck with range exceeding 900 km

Iveco and Toyota are collaborating on the development of a heavy-duty hydrogen-powered truck that promises a range exceeding 900 kilometers while simultaneously using only half the battery capacity of the previous version.

This vehicle, named IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell, is part of the Empower project, which is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program, and is scheduled to be on the roads in the first half of 2027.

Toyota contributes its fuel cell system, specifically the third generation presented by the Japanese manufacturer in February 2025, which has a total power output of 408 horsepower. Meanwhile, Iveco is responsible for the overall vehicle development, integration of various components, and system validation, supported by experience gained from the H2Haul program, which has already used hydrogen trucks on European routes.

A notable aspect of the project is not just the power, but the energy optimization: a more efficient management strategy allows the truck to require charging only half the battery used in the first generation of Iveco FCEVs. This reduction in vehicle weight and simplification of its architecture are crucial factors in the freight transport sector, as every kilogram saved in the structure translates to increased freight capacity.

The expected durability for this model exceeds 25,000 operating hours, a benchmark the industry seeks to achieve to match the performance of a fuel cell with a diesel engine. This expectation is supported by the third generation of Toyota technology, which, according to the manufacturer, offers a lifespan comparable to a diesel, approximately 20% higher efficiency than the previous generation, and a more compact design.

The company also endorses the use of a 700 bar refueling pressure. In practice, the announced 900 km corresponds to a trip starting from São Paulo, reaching Curitiba, and returning without needing refueling stops.

Although there are no immediate plans for the S-eWay Fuel Cell to reach the Brazilian market, Iveco maintains its operations in Sete Lagoas (MG), where it manufactures the S-Way, its only product development center outside of Europe. The multi-energy logic applied in this European project is already present in the S-Way NG, which runs on natural gas and biomethane, and in the electric eDaily model.

Additionally, hydrogen is no longer a remote possibility in Brazil. In July, GWM fueled a fuel cell truck with green hydrogen produced at Senai Cimatec, located in Camaçari (BA). However, the persistent challenge, both in Brazil and Europe, remains the refueling infrastructure.

The validation phases for the S-eWay Fuel Cell will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, preceding road tests scheduled for the first half of 2027. Neither company has released information regarding the price or the schedule for mass production. Concurrently, Iveco has been testing since June, in partnership with the operator Gruber Logistics, a battery electric truck derived from the S-eWay Rigid, which is also part of the Empower project scope.
