The US State Department has approved the proposed deal for the sale of 48 F-35 fighters to Saudi Arabia. The total value of this supply package is estimated at approximately $24.3 billion.
According to an official statement, Saudi Arabia requested the purchase of 48 F-35 aircraft, as well as 49 Pratt & Whitney F135-PW-100 engines, communication equipment, spare parts, and other auxiliary components.
The Department stated that this deal will support the foreign policy and national objectives of the United States, as it will enhance the security of a major ally not belonging to NATO, which is a driving force for political stability and economic development in the Persian Gulf region. It was also added that the sale of these fighters will not alter the military balance in the region.
