The UN High Commissioner expressed great concern regarding information about the mass detention of over 150 LGBTIQ+ individuals and human rights defenders in Turkey. The organization also voiced apprehension about mistreatment under custody and the potential repercussions of this situation on the civic environment.
Volker Türk, the High Commissioner, appealed to Turkish authorities, requesting that the human rights of all be respected without any form of discrimination, including sexual orientation or gender identity. He demanded the immediate release of people who were arbitrarily detained.
This scenario occurred after the Turkish Minister of Justice, Akin Gürlek, announced the opening of legal proceedings against 162 suspects, nine associations, and 13 companies. The actions were taken in 15 Turkish provinces, resulting from a large-scale operation conducted overnight in nightlife establishments considered 'gay' and in the residences of LGBT+ activists (including lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, and others).
This large-scale operation, which has drawn international criticism, is part of the 'Family Decade,' an initiative promoted by the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The declared objective of this decade is to protect children, the family structure, and social order, as emphasized by the Minister of Justice.
Additionally, several accounts belonging to human rights defenders and media outlets were blocked on social networks, all within the scope of the operation named 'My Family is Safe.'
Although homosexuality is not criminalized in Turkey, it is widely disapproved of, and homophobia permeates even the highest levels of the State. President Erdogan often labels LGBT+ individuals as 'perverts,' holding them responsible for the country's sharp decline in birth rates.
The non-governmental organization Amnesty International stated that this generalized repression is not related to family protection but rather to the purpose of exacerbating the suffering of a community that has already faced discrimination and intimidation for decades.
