Pitso Mosimane's career reaches a culmination as two clubs he helped develop—Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahli—will meet in the final of the Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup, which will take place in Pretoria on Saturday at 15:00.
Sundowns will host Al Ahli, and the winner will secure the trophy and advance to the Champions Cup, where victory guarantees participation in the intercontinental final against UEFA Champions League winners, Paris Saint-Germain.
This match unites the current CAF Champions League champions (Sundowns) and the AFC Champions League champions (Al Ahli), with the Saudi team reaching the final after defeating Oceania champions, Auckland City. Mosimane played a key role in the success of both clubs, notably achieving five league titles and the first continental trophy during his successful spell at Brazilians.
He is also well known in Saudi Arabia, as in May 2023, he brought Al Ahli back into the Saudi Pro League after a successful period working with the African giant Al Ahli.
As two former clubs clash shortly after Mosimane was appointed coach of Bafana Bafana, he shared his thoughts on the significance of this high-profile match at Loftus Versfeld stadium.
Mosimane stated: 'It will be very emotional for me,' he said after announcing the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers against Guinea on September 26 and Eritrea on September 30, as well as a friendly match against Egypt on October 4.
He added: 'I have won trophies on both sides. The names and level up there. Others won the Champions League twice in a row, and this one just won it.'
'I am glad I could contribute in some way. It is humbling to see both teams. Both of them have won the Champions League.'
Despite both clubs holding a special place in his heart, Mosimane suggested that Sundowns has an advantage, noting their strong home form, participation in the MTN8 final, and a stable squad retained from the last continental triumph.
In contrast, Mosimane pointed out that Al Ahli is going through a transitional period following the departure of high-profile players. He noted: 'Al Ahli is not in good shape right now. Riyad Mahrez left. Roberto Firmino left. They do not have a stable team, although they still have the Englishman Ivan Toney.'
He continued: 'They are not in good condition regarding injuries. I think Sundowns has the advantage. The Yellows have the advantage over the Greens, but football is football. It will be great to see the guys and the management again. A good story, right?'
