Global semiconductor industry leaders see growing potential for chip manufacturing in India

Representatives of leading global companies in the semiconductor sector noted India's growing manufacturing ambitions, its engineering potential, and its expanding technological ecosystem as significant opportunities for the global semiconductor industry.

During the Semicon India event, held from September 17 to 19, executives pointed to areas where the country could play a more substantial role in the global semiconductor supply chain. These areas include artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, power electronics, advanced packaging, and chip manufacturing.

Wayne Allan, Director of Strategic Sourcing at ASML, forecasts that the Indian semiconductor market could reach a value of $110–$120 billion by 2030. He emphasized that realizing the country's localization ambitions would require the establishment of numerous fabs and the formation of a much broader supporting infrastructure.

For ASML, a direct opportunity lies in Tata Electronics' plans to build a 300mm semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, for which a strategic partnership was announced this May. Allan stated that the company is ready to support this project to ensure Tata's success and contribute to building more fabs in India, viewing the country as a huge chance to become a major player and semiconductor hub.

Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon Technologies, expressed confidence in India's ambitions, noting that the rapid development of data centers creates demand not only for computing chips but also for technologies related to power generation, transmission, storage, and efficient delivery.

In his keynote address, Hanebeck highlighted opportunities in renewable energy, battery storage, solid-state transformers, high-voltage DC systems, and power conversion within data centers, asserting that 'there is no computing without energy, and we care from the grid to the core.'

Meanwhile, Srinivasan Iyengar, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Intel's Central Engineering Group, reported that the company has been operating in India for over four decades. He considers India's engineering talent and startup ecosystem vital elements for the company's future growth.

Iyengar noted that 'the most important thing is trusting partnership.' He added that India's development process 'from good to great' is impressive and contributes to advancing the vision of semiconductors, making them a new key concept.
