The modernization of the suburban railway fleet is planned in Uzbekistan. The Tashkent City Council approved the project to purchase ten modern electric trains from the Czech company Škoda Transportation.
These new sets will be introduced into operation on seven different railway routes, which will allow for an increase in capacity by at least 20%. The cost of the trains themselves is estimated at 123.5 million euros, but including all additional costs, the total budget for the project will amount to 157 million euros.
To secure financing for this purchase, a loan from the European Investment Bank for a term of 24 years is planned. The new carriages are intended to replace outdated rolling stock and significantly improve the comfort of suburban journeys.
The electric trains will be equipped with modern features, including climate control, ergonomic seats, special zones for passengers with reduced mobility, improved sound insulation, and electronic passenger information systems. There is also a provision for purchasing tickets online.
An additional advantage of the new sets is a faster acceleration and braking process, which should reduce the overall travel time on routes with frequent stops.
Routes for the new electric trains
The new electric trains will operate on routes connecting cities in the Tashkent region and other regions. Among them are: Tashkent – Chirchik – Chinarkent; Tashkent – Yangiyul-1 – Chinaz – Syrdarya – Gulistan – Yangier – Khavas – Bekabad; Tashkent – Nurafshon – Akhangaran – Angren; Tashkent – Keles; Kokand – Pap – Namangan – Andijan – Margilan; Samarkand – Bukhara; as well as Samarkand – Karshi – Shahrisabz.
The concept of this project was approved by the Tashkent City Council on September 17, 2026. A commission on foreign investment and tourism will monitor the implementation of the project.
The agreement for the supply of the electric train batch was concluded between the suburban transport operator Shahar Atrofida Yo‘lovchi Tashish, which is part of O‘zbekiston temir yo‘llari, and the Czech company Škoda Transportation. The signing of this agreement took place in June 2026 at the Tashkent International Investment Forum.
