Former experienced Australian player Matthew Wade has announced his decision to leave domestic cricket. The 38-year-old reported this on Thursday, September 17, concluding his nearly two-decade journey in Australian cricket.
Matthew Wade previously retired from international cricket in 2023, but subsequently continued to play for the Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League (BBL) and for Tasmania in List A cricket. He has now decided to cease playing for both these teams.
One of the most discussed moments in Matthew Wade's career was his participation in the T20 World Cup 2021 semi-final, which took place in the UAE and Oman. In that match, Australia faced Pakistan. Pakistan demonstrated impressive play in the tournament and was in a strong position heading into the semi-final. However, in the final overs, Wade managed to change the course of the game by hitting three consecutive sixes off Shaheen Afridi's over, allowing Australia to advance to the final. Following this, Australia secured its first-ever T20 World Cup victory by defeating New Zealand.
Matthew Wade represented Australia across all three formats for a long time. He played 36 Test matches, 97 ODIs, and 92 T20 Internationals. During this period, he scored 4682 runs at an average of 27.38. In his international career, Wade achieved 5 centuries and 19 half-centuries.
