Imagine waking up to mist over the hills, spending the morning amidst the canopy of the misty zone's forests, and then concluding the day with a long lunch, a spa treatment, or a quiet drink overlooking the Midlands. The Karkloof area has the ability to make such a day feel completely natural.
Located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, this region combines misty zone forests, open grasslands, wetlands, and active farms. This creates a rural haven where adventure and relaxation coexist beautifully.
At the center is the Karkloof Conservancy—a landscape spanning about 40,000 hectares, consisting of natural forests, grasslands, and wetlands. This area is known for its biodiversity; it is home to three endangered South African crane species, as well as animals like the samango monkeys, bushbuck, and the Karkloof butterfly.
The misty zone forests are perhaps the defining feature of Karkloof. However, they also carry a history that is easily overlooked. Throughout KwaZulu-Natal, many sections of the misty zone forests were logged for timber between approximately 1880 and 1940. Today, conservation efforts are focused on protecting the remaining areas and restoring the wider surrounding landscape.
One of the most iconic ways to experience the forests is from above. The Karkloof Canopy Tour allows visitors to ascend into the forest canopy, moving between platforms via 10 zip lines. Guides provide information on forest ecology, trees, and giant ferns, offering views of the surrounding valley and waterfall. Currently, the tour includes 12 platforms and takes about two hours.
While the misty zone forests are the main element, there are other components to the experience. Wetlands form an important part of the landscape and its catchment system, and the surrounding grasslands serve as habitat for various wildlife. Furthermore, there is Karkloof Falls, surrounded by forests and countryside, which makes the Midlands so unique.
For those seeking more adventure, mountain biking, hiking, and trail running are available. The landscape constantly changes, alternating between forest, farmland, streams, and grasslands, giving active pursuits a distinctly rural character. The Karkloof Trail Run develops this direction, offering trails through the forests and countryside around the Karkloof Country Club.
Although Karkloof is generally considered a wilderness sanctuary, every day does not have to be dedicated to outdoor activity. Karkloof also possesses a softer, restorative side. The Karkloof Safari Spa offers a more relaxed contrast to outdoor activities, featuring private villas with views of the surrounding scenery and spa amenities, including hydrotherapy pools, sauna, and steam room. The spa has been operating in the Karkloof Valley since 2008.
It is this delicate combination that makes Karkloof particularly appealing. One can spend the morning walking in the forest and do almost nothing in the afternoon. What makes Karkloof special is the ease of transition between these two modes. You can start the morning with a walk on a forest trail, return with muddy boots and tired legs, and then replace them with a comfortable robe, a long lunch, and an afternoon rest by the water.
