Apple is reportedly considering re-entering the corporate server sector by leveraging advancements in its chips developed for the Mac line, which could be applied in enterprise environments. Rumors indicate that the M8 Ultra chip would be the starting point for this potential return.
Historically, Apple has been present in the server segment. Its involvement began in 1993 with products like the Apple Workgroup Server and the Macintosh Server, which were essentially modified Macintoshes for corporate use. However, the company's most prominent period in this niche occurred between 2002 and 2011, with the Xserve line, specifically designed to meet corporate needs.
In a past experience, the author came into contact with an Xserve, which was a 1U rack-type machine and, in its initial iterations, used PowerPC G5 processors. The unit accessed by the author belonged to the latest generation, based on Intel Xeon processors. This Xserve functioned as a storage system, allowing access to large files over the internal network, presenting such a high level of stability and reliability that the university's IT team considered it extremely valuable.
The official discontinuation of the Xserve line in 2011 occurred, presumably because Apple concentrated its efforts on the end consumer. However, sources such as The Information and Reuters suggest that Apple is considering returning to the enterprise server market, although it is unclear whether the Xserve brand will be revived.
Current speculation points to the new line potentially featuring configurations with two or four M8 Ultra chips, which would be connected via Nvidia's NVLink Fusion technology. This technology allows CPUs to exchange data at high speed and low latency. Neither Apple nor Nvidia has issued official statements on the matter.
If the project moves forward, the new Apple servers could only be launched after 2029, the projected date for the release of the supposed M8 Ultra chips. Furthermore, rumors mention that Apple's current CEO, John Ternus, supports the project. However, he does not have full autonomy to approve the launch, as the company needs to analyze various factors, such as the acceptance of these devices in the market, considering Apple's price history, which suggests they would be very expensive.
Despite the challenges, there is significant potential given the exponential growth in server demand driven by the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence services, a trend expected to remain accelerated in the coming years.
