The partnership named AerSalus unites pilots' and cabin crew unions, along with medical and engineering legal experts. The organization's goal is to exchange specialized knowledge in areas such as operational experience, aerospace medicine, toxicology, aviation engineering, and maintenance to deepen the industry's understanding of air quality issues.
The coalition, whose name refers to the Latin phrase 'Safe Air,' was established in June 2026 and strengthened by signing the 'Lisbon Declaration on Cooperation between Air Quality in Aircraft and Cabin.'
Four organizations joined the alliance: the National Association of Aviators (SNA) from Brazil, the French Association of Victims of Aerotoxic Syndrome (AVSA), and two Portuguese unions—the Pilots' Civil Aviation Union (SPAC) and the National Union of Civil Aviation Crew (SNPVAC).
The organization emphasizes that the technical and medical complexity of cabin air quality requires coordinated, multidisciplinary global efforts, as air quality in aircraft critically affects operational safety, crew health, and passenger protection.
Through the creation of this group, signatories commit to jointly combating air pollution incidents, including those related to odors, smoke, vapors, and aerosols, using a new standard of mutual support, technical responsibility, and scientific transparency.
The alliance intends to create a permanent channel for exchanging operational experience, academic research, scientific sources, and best practices. Furthermore, it will promote laboratory testing and toxicological analysis to identify chemical exposure and assess potential health impacts, and advocate for improved standardized protocols for reporting, monitoring, and analyzing air quality incidents, while also pushing for enhanced maintenance and medical care procedures.
Another objective of the alliance is to join forces to raise awareness among regulators, manufacturers, and airlines regarding the need to improve detection and monitoring tools. The alliance reports that it collaborates with various institutions in Portugal and France to ensure diagnosis by physicians, forensic experts, and nanoscience specialists for numerous crews worldwide who have a confirmed medical history of multiple exposures and long-term symptoms consistent with aerotoxic syndrome.
