Buildner has released the results of the fifth edition of the international Architect's Chair Competition. This annual event invites architects and designers from various parts of the world to develop an original chair that represents their design visions and project philosophies.
Chair design is presented as an example of architecture's interdisciplinary nature, as it integrates concepts such as ergonomics, proportion, structure, materiality, and craftsmanship into a single object. The submissions this year showed a vast diversity of approaches, ranging from extremely minimalist and structurally efficient solutions to creations inspired by cultural references, material experimentation, and new manufacturing techniques.
Competition Evaluation
An international panel, composed of industrial and product architects and designers, evaluated the proposals. Among the judges were Inma Bermúdez (Studio Inma Bermúdez), Torbjørn Anderssen and Espen Voll (Anderssen & Voll), Boris Berlin (Boris Berlin Design), Hee Welling and Gudmundur Ludvik (Welling / Ludvik), Thomas Lykke (OEO Studio), as well as Sebastian Alberdi, Sarah Hossli, Lorenz Noelle, and Sofie Østerby. The jury members judged the suggestions based on criteria such as conceptual clarity, long-term usability, ergonomics, artisanal quality, structural logic, material use, and production feasibility, with a special focus on projects that managed to translate architectural thought into chair furniture.
Sixth Edition in Partnership with the Stockholm Furniture Fair
Following the conclusion of the fifth phase, Buildner also announced the sixth edition of the Architect's Chair, which will be held in collaboration with the Stockholm Furniture Fair. This new edition will continue to explore the intersection between design, craftsmanship, and architecture, and the winning projects will be exhibited during the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Submissions are open to architects and designers, with the early registration deadline set for September 24, 2026.
