South Africa has announced the launch of six projects related to green hydrogen and Power-to-X technology, aiming to attract investment and establish a new hydrogen-based industrial economy.
These projects were presented at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit and were accompanied by the release of the first South African Green Hydrogen Deal Book. This book provides potential investors, financiers, and technology partners with an overview of projects at various stages of development.
Among the six announced projects are the Coega Green Ammonia Project, the Saldanha Hydrogen Direct Iron Reduction Project, the Phelan Green Group's Saldanha Project, the Prieska Reserve Project, Green E-fuel Producers, and Green Hydrogen Solutions. These initiatives cover areas such as sustainable fuel, industrial decarbonization, green manufacturing, and application in the energy transition.
The first group of projects went through the government-supported Power-to-X Project Development Standard. This standard is designed to enhance the transparency and quality of project preparation, as well as assess their investment readiness.
The Green Hydrogen Deal Book was developed under the GH₂ Plan for Investment in a Just Energy Transition and aims to provide a consolidated view of the developing project portfolio in South Africa.
The Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, stated that these projects could contribute to export growth, localization, and industrial development. Meanwhile, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Kgosiyenso Ramokgopa, noted that the goal of this initiative is to connect projects with investors and other strategic partners.
The Industrial Development Corporation also participated in preparing the projects, mobilizing investments, and providing technical support in this sector. It is expected that new projects will be added to the portfolio as they go through the Power-to-X Project Development Standard process.
