International travel has become easier for Ghanaian citizens, as passport holders from this country can now visit three popular destinations without the need for a visa. This was made possible after the ratification and implementation of visa waiver agreements between Ghana and these three states.
These conditions apply to holders of ordinary, official, and diplomatic passports from Ghana, although the permissible length of stay varies depending on the chosen destination.
For lovers of tropical relaxation, the Maldives are now accessible to Ghanaian citizens without an entry visa for up to 30 days. Similarly, visa-free entry is permitted to Zambia for the same 30 days, giving Ghanaian travelers easier access to one of Southern Africa's most sought-after destinations for wildlife viewing, adventure, and Victoria Falls.
Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda allows Ghanaian passport holders to stay in the territory for up to 90 days without obtaining an entry visa.
This change is the result of a Cabinet approval announced in April 2026. At that time, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the approval of agreements with Antigua and Barbuda, the Maldives, and Zambia. Initially, it was anticipated that these agreements would allow citizens of the respective countries to make short trips without visas.
This step fits into Ghana's broader efforts to improve the international mobility of its citizens and strengthen bilateral ties with other countries. Furthermore, Ghana continues to implement policies aimed at simplifying international travel for both its own citizens and visitors to the country.
Although visas are not required for short stays, travelers should not assume that simply arriving with a passport and passing through immigration control is sufficient. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana emphasized that all travelers are obliged to comply with the immigration and entry requirements of the destination country.
This includes having a valid passport and any other documents that immigration services may request. It is also necessary to remain within the permitted period according to the relevant visa waiver agreement. It is important to note that visa privileges do not automatically cover activities such as work, study, or permanent residence; appropriate permits will be required for such purposes.
The Ministry advised travelers to check the latest entry, health, and other conditions with the relevant authorities or the nearest embassy or mission before traveling, as these requirements may change.
For Ghanaian citizens, the overall change is significant, as three completely different destinations have become much more accessible: from the beaches and turquoise waters of the Maldives to the wildlife and waterfalls of Zambia and the Caribbean landscapes of Antigua and Barbuda. This is another small step towards making international travel less complicated for Ghanaian passport holders.
