Emma Pallant-Brown aims for victory in the 10km race in Joburg thanks to multi-sport experience

Emma Pallant-Brown is set to conquer glory in the 10-kilometer race in Joburg, leveraging the advantage gained from participating in multiple sports. After setting a new personal record in the 10km distance last month, she intends to test her abilities against top athletes from South and East Africa at the Absa Run Your City Joburg 10K on National Heritage Day.

When Emma Pallant-Brown participates in the Absa Run Your City Joburg 10K on National Heritage Day, she will not just be competing for a spot on the podium, but also representing one of the most interesting global trends in modern sports—the revolution of cross-sport training. Historically, elite athletes remained within narrow specialized disciplines; however, today, cross-polarization from multidisciplinary experience is leading to elite success in both running and athletics.

Road Running

Consider the example of Karsten Warholm from Norway, an icon of sprint and jumping. He won gold in the decathlon at the 2013 World Youth Championships and silver in the decathlon at the 2015 European Junior Championships before focusing entirely on running. This multi-event experience laid the foundation for an unprecedented career that includes Olympic gold, numerous world titles, and a bronze medal (46.78 s) at the Ultimate World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

A similar trend is demonstrated by horizontal jumpers. Simon Ehammer from Switzerland, who holds the world record in the long jump in the decathlon—8.51 m—regularly opts out of the grueling decathlon discipline to compete with individual jumpers. In Budapest, he placed third with a result of 8.07 m.

Marthe Koala from Burkina Faso, a former African heptathlon champion, shifted her focus exclusively to the long jump. Utilizing track speed and natural power, she secured a place among the world's best at the Ultimate World Athletics Championships final in Budapest.

Pallant-Brown's Endurance Advantage

In distance running, Pallant-Brown demonstrates that a multi-disciplinary background creates the perfect speed engine. This runner, born in the UK and based in South Africa, has been a three-time duathlon world champion. After the birth of her first child late last year, she decided to concentrate solely on 10km and half marathon running.

The results speak for themselves: a new 10km personal record of 32:45, which helped her secure second place in the Totalsports Women’s Race in Durban on August 2nd; a confident victory in the Waterfall City half marathon in Johannesburg on September 12th; a podium finish in the Two Oceans half marathon; and inclusion in the top 10 at the HOKA Paris Half Marathon.
