Assam artisans transform a single bamboo stalk into hundreds of everyday items

From bamboo pole to piece of furniture

When Saikia established a small workshop for making bamboo and rattan products in 2006, he aimed to show that the abundantly growing plant around him could be more than just a utilitarian item.

His workshop now produces bamboo furniture and decorative items, employing about 20 young artisans. Some of them have managed to earn a living without leaving their villages for cities.

He also learned that the durability of bamboo depends on how it is processed. By collaborating with the Tropical Forest Research Institute in Jorhat, he mastered bamboo processing techniques and worked to enhance the longevity of his products. This allowed bamboo to move beyond traditional crafts and into the realm of furniture, cottages, and architectural spaces.

The Government's National Bamboo Mission lists construction, furniture, flooring, doors, windows, frames, trusses, and other building elements among bamboo applications.

The Indian Institute of Wood Science and Technology also notes that bamboo can be harvested in a two-to-four-year cycle and has been used in over 1000 documented applications as panels and planks.

A home can start with bamboo

In many parts of India, especially in the Northeast, bamboo has long been part of housing construction. It is used for walls, roofs, floors, doors, windows, and structural supports. Modern technologies have also paved the way for laminated panels and engineered bamboo products.

The Government of India's National Bamboo Mission includes in its list types used for construction, furniture making, basket weaving, food containers, musical instruments, and other purposes.

This is important because bamboo is a fast-growing and renewable resource. However, responsible use still requires proper harvesting, processing, and recycling. Saikia's experience serves as a reminder that having bamboo is not enough; skills and technology are what determine the value that can be extracted from it.

It can also end up on the dinner table

Bamboo is not just a building material. Certain species produce edible shoots, which are consumed in different parts of India and across Asia. The National Bamboo Mission lists edible shoots among the uses of species such as Melocanna baccifera, Dendrocalamus asper, and Dendrocalamus giganteus.

The plant can also be used to make food containers, kitchen utensils, and other household items. Thus, from the field to the kitchen, bamboo can find its place in daily life.

From craft to paper and fabric

The utility of bamboo does not end in the artisan's workshop. It is used as raw material for producing cellulose and paper. Furthermore, it can be processed into fibers for use in textile products.

The Telangana government's Bamboo Mission includes in its list the use of bamboo for producing cellulose and paper, textiles, building materials, furniture, and even energy production.

Its traditional uses are equally diverse: bamboo can be turned into baskets, mats, lamps, storage items, and musical instruments. Different Indian varieties have specific uses depending on their strength, size, and properties.

In Assam, Saikia has given some of these familiar forms a place in modern homes. His furniture has found markets outside the state, and his skills have allowed him to visit international workshops in Nepal.

And the earth itself

Perhaps one of the most important uses of bamboo is one we do not always see. Its dense root system helps hold soil and reduce erosion. Research and government-supported work in India are also studying the use of bamboo for land reclamation.

The Chief Scientific Advisor's office notes that a bamboo-based conservation system can reduce soil loss from 22 tons per hectare per year to 4.5 tons while retaining 45 percent of soil moisture. The same work records bamboo biomass production at 12–30 tons per hectare per year.

Government materials on bamboo also emphasize its potential for carbon sequestration due to rapid biomass accumulation. This humble plant also plays a role in protecting the land where people live and work.

One plant, multiple sources of income

The most significant application of bamboo is not an object at all. It is the work created around it. In Saikia's workshop in Jorhat, it passes through many hands before becoming a finished chair or decorative item. Artisans cut, shape, weave, and polish it. Distributors bring the finished products to new markets. Buyers bring a piece of Assam into their homes.

Its story shows what happens when a resource that people take for granted gains skills, processing, design, and a market. The Government of India's National Bamboo Mission has created hundreds of nurseries, recycling, and production units as part of efforts to strengthen the bamboo economy. As of December 2024, the mission reported 528 production and processing units and 104 processing and conservation units.

Thus, the phrase '100 uses' is not so much about counting everything bamboo can turn into. It is about seeing the possibilities in what has always been nearby.

For someone like Saikia, this opportunity began with a simple bamboo pole in Assam. Today, it can become a chair in Delhi, a building component, a basket, food, a sheet of paper, or a livelihood that allows the artisan to stay close to home.

For over four thousand years, farmers on the Indian subcontinent extracted deep blue pigment from the leaves of Indigofera tinctoria. This process involved fermentation and oxidation, transforming colorless indican into a vibrant dye. Merchants traveling the Silk Road called this product indicum, which is a Greek word meaning 'from India.'

By the 17th century, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders actively competed for this pigment, which earned the nickname 'blue gold' due to its high value.

Dye Built on Coercion

However, for those who actually cultivated indigo, the history was entirely different. As the East India Company increased its control over Bengal and Bihar, European planters forced peasants into agreements that stripped them of almost all choice.

Under a system known as tinkathia, tenants were obligated to cultivate indigo on three-twentieths of their land, usually on the most fertile plots. They were also required to sell the harvest to the planters at prices set significantly below market value. To this were added loans with exorbitant interest rates, condemning generations of ryots to a debt trap they could not repay.

Indigo cultivation in Bengal began in 1777, and within a few decades, it became one of the most exploitative practices of the colonial economy. By the summer of 1859, this exploitation reached a critical point. Peasants in the Nadia district of Bengal, led by Digambar Biswas and Bishnu Biswas, simply refused to sow indigo, and resistance quickly spread to Jessore, Pabna, and Murshidabad.

Farmers began strikes, boycotted planters, and in some places directly attacked indigo factories. Dramatist Dinabandhu Mitra captured their suffering in the play 'Nil Darpan,' which proved so effective in exposing the cruelty of the system that its English translator, missionary James Long, was imprisoned for publication.

The uprising forced the colonial government to convene the Indigo Commission in 1860. The commission's findings were so compelling that indigo cultivation in Bengal collapsed within a year, and many planters permanently closed their factories.

The Dye That Made Mahatma

Planters who left Bengal moved west to Bihar, where the same tinkathia system persisted for many more decades. It was here, in the Champaran district, that the story of indigo took its most significant turn.

In 1917, an indigo cultivator named Rajkumar Shukla persuaded a lawyer recently returned from South Africa to personally examine the living conditions of the farmers. This lawyer turned out to be Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, and his visit to Champaran became the first Satyagraha he led on Indian soil.

Gandhi refused to leave when British officials ordered him to depart, an act of quiet defiance that drew the attention of the entire nation. He then gathered testimonies from over 8,000 farmers, meticulously documenting the abuses of the tinkathia system.

Under growing pressure, the government established an inquiry commission and, notably, included Gandhi in its composition. The commission's findings directly led to the passage of the Champaran Agrarian Act of 1918, which abolished forced indigo cultivation, compensated farmers for some illegally seized payments, and made indigo cultivation completely voluntary. Within a few years, most European planters abandoned the region.

The Blue Color Returned

Champaran did more than free the farmers of one district. It proved that organized nonviolent resistance could force the British Empire to yield, and it gave Gandhi a method he would use throughout India's struggle for freedom.

This same spirit later found expression in khadi—hand-spun cloth that Gandhi promoted as a rejection of colonial industry, often dyed with the very indigo that once symbolized exploitation. Today, this transformation continues in dyeing vats and workshops across India, where artisans reviving natural indigo dyeing are turning a color once imposed upon their ancestors into a source of livelihood and pride, one vat at a time.
